An analysis of the bill is being prepared and will be posted as soon as it becomes available. Generally, the "community" is very pleased. The Code of Ethics, last revised in 1981, has come under critical scrutiny in the library press in recent years. The hearing will examine the question of whether revisions of the current code are needed and, if so, what the nature of the revisions should be. All persons who wish to testify, whether on their own or on behalf of an ALA unit, are invited to contact the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom for a guaranteed time slot at the hearing. Open debate will be conducted, as time permits, following the testimony of those who have signed up in advance. Written testimony from those unable to attend will be considered equally by the committee if submitted. Gay Dannelly has been appointed chair of the ALCTS Task Force on Ethics. This Task Force is charged with the responsibility of reviewing the ALA Code of Ethics in terms of ALCTS areas of expertise and recommending action. If you have comments on the Code, please contact Gay at gnd@ohstmvsa. ************************************************************************* LIBRARY INSTRUCTION AND PRESERVATION EDUCATION: CONVERGING CONCEPTS Given that one of the greatest threats to library collections is the patron, a union between preservation education and library instruction seems logical and inevitable. The 1992 Midwinter Forum of the Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) will focus on preservation education for library users. The Forum will take place on Sunday, Janaury 26, 1992, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Discussion starters will briefly present their views regarding preservation education in conjunction with library instruction. In the tradition of discussion forums, the topic will then be open to the audience-at-large for what is sure to be an animated discussion. For further information, please contact Jeanne Drewes, at Mary Washington College, 703/899-4586 (voice) or 703/899-4499 (fax); no e-mail available. ************************************************************************* ************************************************************************ ALCTS NETWORK NEWS (ISSN 1056-6694) is published irregularly by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association.
