The ALCTS Newsletter is an official publication of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services. The term of the editor is three years. The editor normally is eligible for reappointment to one additional three year term. There is a stipend to offset some conference expenses. Each application should include a cover letter indicating why the applicant is interested in the position; a resume, including work in ALA and ALCTS, and a list of publications; the names and phone numbers of three references; and at least two recent writing samples, preferably of items prepared for publication. Send nominations and applications by November 15, 1991 to: David Gleim, Monographic Cataloging, University of North Carolina, Catalog Department, CB #3914, Davis Library, Chapel Hill, NC 27599; e-mail: uncdgl@unc.bitnet. Candidates will be interviewed by the search committee during the ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio, TX, January 1992. ************************************************************************* ALCTS ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING DISCUSSION GROUP PRELIMINARY ORGANIZATION MEETING ANNOUNCED A preliminary meeting to assess the need for a new ALCTS Discussion Group on Electronic Publishing will be held in San Antonio on Sunday, January 26, 11:30-12:30. This group in intended to provide a forum for discussion of collecting, acquiring, cataloging, storing, distributing, and archiving information in electronic format--all topics that frequently appear on various listservs. Evidence is that many libraries are forming working groups to deal with these issues on a local level. The agenda for the organizational meeting will include discussion about the need for and purpose of the group, how it would differ from other ALCTS discussion groups, the process for petitioning ALCTS to formally recognize the group, and possible topics for future meetings. Location for the meeting will be announced in the Midwinter Meeting program. For more information, contact Barbara Winters, Assistant University Librarian for Collection Services, Wright State University, Dayton, OH 45435 (phone: 513-873-2380, BITNET: BWINTERS@WSU, Internet: BWINTERS@DESIRE.WRIGHT.EDU). ************************************************************************* LETTERS FROM OUR READERS From time to time AN2 receives letters in addition to press releases, meeting notices, and short articles. Here's a sampling. The first was received after Volume 2, Number 8, September 23,1991, which carried the first of two thank-you's from overseas subscribers (the second is included in this issue). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 24 Sep 1991 16:28:47 PDT From: Peter Stangl To: u34261@uicvm.uic.edu Subject: 'Pat on the back' To: U34261@uicvm.bitnet OK, just so the US is not left behind Hong Kong... I would like to add my thanks to you on behalf of the profession for your selfless attitude. That's what it takes to maintain the list and to produce the publication without compensation--and you clearly have it. Peter Stangl, Director, Lane Library, Stanford University Medical Center, Stanford, CA 94305-5323, 415-723-7196 FAX: 415-725-7471 E-MAIL: peter@krypton.stanford.edu or ma.pss@stanford.bitnet EDITOR'S REPLY: Actually, preparing AN2 is part of my work--and I get help from others on the ALCTS staff--but I frequently edit and assemble an issue "after hours." ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 27 Sep 1991 15:40 +0800 From: B092731@CUCSC.BITNET To: u34261@uicvm.uic.edu Subject: Cheers I have been an ALA overseas member for 5 years. The ALA publications usually reached me one month late. Thanks to your good work so that I can read ALCTS News early. I just joined the user list a couple of days ago. And I do hope that other ALA divisions will follow suit. Regards, Edith Wu University Library, the Chinese University of Hong Kong ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oct 91 10:28:53 CDT Date: Wed, 9 Oct 91 08:28:51 PDT To: u34261@uicvm.uic.edu From: "Sherman Clarke" Subject: AN2 and art info I was pleased that you had included an announcement of the ARLIS meeting in ALCTS NETWORK NEWS. It seems to me that your editorial role is to include as much relevant stuff as you can (well, maybe not daily or hourly issues of AN2) and to include how to find out more when appropriate. We all here enjoy having the issues of AN2. EDITOR'S REPLY: We will continue to include notices of conferences on as many aspects of librarianship as we can. We do edit for space, so we might fail to list all speakers and topics. But we will provide an address, preferably an e-mail address, where our readers can obtain fuller information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 5 Nov 91 14:49:12 -0600 From: Ed Jones To: u34261@uicvm.uic.edu Subject: ALCTS committee minutes I applaud the decision of the SS Committee to Study Serials Cataloging to make their reports available through ALCTSERV, as well as the decision to make MARBI minutes available through USMARC-L. This should become the norm for ALCTS committees. Their minutes and reports have an audience beyond their members, and their provision in such a timely fashion facilitates further discussion on topics of interest as well as serving the more mundane function of keeping interested members of the profession informed. I suggest that the minutes and reports of ALCTS committees be made available as soon as possible through ALCTSERV (CC:DA minutes would be especially useful). -- Ed Jones, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign EDITOR'S REPLY: As one of the three serial publications of ALCTS, AN2 will seek to report ALCTS news as appropriate. Research will continue to be published in LRTS. Shorter, practical essays and comprehensive news of the division will continue to be published in the _ALCTS Newsletter_. AN2's stated purpose is to "provide timely and comprehensive coverage of items of concern to librarians engaged in collection management, acquisitions, cataloging, serials, preservation, and the reproduction of library materials. AN2 will contain advance copy of articles and features that will appear later in the print publication of the division, the ALCTS NEWSLETTER. AN2 will also feature late-breaking news such as ALA Annual and Midwinter conference schedules (including meeting room locations) and reports shortly after the conference of major actions and developments. AN2 will also feature current legislative news, news from the publishing world, and ALCTS candidates for office and election results." However, because AN2 is part of a larger service to ALCTS members, called ALCTSERV, we are able to make the full text of minutes available electronically. As we did with the minutes from the SS Committee to Study Serials Cataloging, we will publish the summary in a regular issue of AN2 and add the full text to the fileserver which contains all the back issues of AN2, ALCTS forms, etc. ALCTS Committee Chairs, here's your chance! If you have prepared the minutes from your committee in machine-readable form and you are able to upload them in order to send the file to the ALCTS office over the Internet, we will publish them. ************************************************************************* RESEARCH AWARD FROM LIBRARY ACQUISITIONS: PRACTICE & THEORY The Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory (LAPT) Research Award provides an annual prize of $1,000 for research in the broad areas of acquisitions, serials, publishing, and collection management. The award will be given for one proposal and administered in two parts: $500 when the proposal is selected to fund the research effort and $500 when the completed manuscript is submitted to Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory. The award will be granted to the individual, not the institution, and may be used to cover expenses incurred in conducting the research outlined in the winning proposal, including travel, postage, staff support, supplies, and other items. The winning proposal will identify a critical issue in acquisitions, serials or collection management and outline a rigorous approach to testing or solving the issue raised. Proposals will be judged on their significance, clarity and originality. The proposal should be a brief description (no more than 250 words) of the project. A budget proposal and a one page vita of the author must be attached. Awards will not be limited to experienced researchers. The deadline for submitting proposals is March 15, 1992. Proposals will be reviewed by a panel consisting of the editor-in-chief, the assistant editors, and three members of the editorial board. The winning proposal will be announced at the annual American Library Association Conference (in San Francisco in 1992) and in the third issue of LAPT for the year. Research for the winning proposal must be completed within one year of the date when the award is announced. Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory reserves the right of first refusal of the completed manuscript. Proposals and questions concerning this award should be addressed to: Carol Pitts Hawks, Editor-in-Chief, Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory, 5762B Hibernia Drive, Columbus, OH 43232; (614) 292-6314; FAX: (614) 292-7859 BITNET: CHAWKS@OHSTMVSA.BITNET; Internet: hawks.1@osu.edu ************************************************************************* ************************************************************************* ALCTS NETWORK NEWS (ISSN 1056-6694) is published irregularly by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association.
