Developed by the ALCTS Serials Section, Committee to Study Serials Cataloging and the ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Committee, this institute builds on the successful preconference on Metadata held in Chicago in July 2000. This institute presents effective and the most efficient options for providing library users with access to print and Web resources. Topics range from library leaders' viewpoints on cataloging in an electronic age to the how-to's of creating records. This institute emphasizes presenting the standards, and especially the practicalities, of dealing with metadata for Web resources and a vision for the future, including AACR2, Dublin Core, ISSN, MARC 21, RDF, seriality, XML, W3C and the implementation of new rules, guidelines, and standards. The faculty for this institute include two distinguished international librarians, Ann Huthwaite, Chair, Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR (JSCAACR) and Library Resource Services Manager, Queensland University of Technology; and Professor Yuan-ling Ma, Director, Shanghai Library, China. This institute is intended for librarians - in public, academic, and special libraries - who are responsible for providing users with access to print publications or electronic resources available over the Web and through on-going publication, whether by cataloging, by collecting, or by designing subject-specific Web pages, or by other means. Registration fees for this institute are $325 for ALCTS members and New England Library Association members; $375 for ALA members and International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) members; $425 for non-members. The program, co-sponsored by CLA-ACTSS, will feature Roy Tennant, of the California Digital Library and OCLC's Mark Stackpole. "Digital Libraries" is the theme of the program. Roy's presentation, "How to Tango When All You Know is Waltz," will explore digital library myths and opportunities. Mark will discuss OCLC's move to transform its WorldCat bibliographic database and online union catalog into a globally networked information resource of text, graphics, sound and motion. The committee needs two persons per shift from Saturday, June 16 through Monday, 9 to 5 and from 9 to 3 Tueday, June 19. It's a great opportunity to spread the excitment about ALCTS membership while meeting old friends and making new ones. We promise a great time for all! ************ CALL FOR PAPERS Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL) 2001 Meeting Library/Vendor Partnerships for 21st Century Libraries The Advisory Council of the Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL) invites interested persons to submit proposals for papers to be given at the 77th annual meeting of the association on Oct. 5, 2001 at the Library of Virginia in Richmond. PTPL, a regional affiliate of ALCTS, serves Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Libraries are facing new challenges to maintain existing services, while expanding into new areas. Technical services librarians have sometimes turned to vendor services to supplement existing staff, expand or create new services and gain expertise not available in?house. Vendors are seeking to expand into new markets as some traditional areas are shrinking. Creative partnerships between libraries and vendors can move beyond the traditional services. PTPL requests proposals for presentations on the theme of "Library/Vendor Partnerships for 21st Century Libraries". Presentations may cover areas such as cataloging, authority control, acquisitions, licensing, serials and preservation. Please include the following: Name, address, institution and title, E-mail address, and telephone number of the presenter(s), title of presentation, abstract (not to exceed 200 words), equipment needs, total time required (including time for questions) Proposals should be submitted by May 1, 2001 to Barbara Conaty, bcon@loc.gov.
