The subcommittee publishes three directories of book dealers: Asia/Pacific - www.ala.org/alcts/publications/asia/index.html; Africa/Middle East - www.ala.org/alcts/publications/africa/index.html; and Eastern Europe/Former Soviet Union -www.ala.org/alcts/publications/easteur/toc.html The present directories, available at the URLs above, were originally compiled from surveys of ARL libraries conducted between 1991 and 1995; this project served to update the 1979 print publication Third World Booksellers: a selected list of Bookdealers in Africa, Asia and Latin America. (Latin America was eliminated as a category because of the excellent directory published by SALALM). Since the surveys were completed, the committee has worked to update information contained in the directories and migrate it to the Web. All three directories have had their Master Vendor Lists refreshed in the past year. The directories are available free in this format, and no print editions are planned. 1. It is designed to teach administrators critical thinking and criteria for evaluation: how to plan and implement projects, how to evaluate technology as a preservation strategy, and how to understand the relationship between costs and quality. Instruction will focus on compliance with national and international standards as well as best practices for both microfilm and digital imaging. This is not a technician training program. It is a management seminar with a preservation focus. After an introduction to fundamental preservation strategies, the faculty will present lessons learned from a decade of investigations in the viability of using digital technology for preservation purposes. The curriculum includes in-depth discussion of the following topics: preparation, selection, and analysis of source material; microfilm quality control; the basics of digital imaging technology; project workflow; preservation concerns; cost and quality; and microfilm/digital hybrid approaches. The presenters include: Becky Ryder, Preservation Librarian, University of Kentucky; Bob Mottice, President, Mottice Micrographics, Inc.; Paul Conway, Head, Preservation Department, Yale University Library; Millie OConnell, NEDCC Preservation Consultant. Attendance will be limited to 18 participants and early registration is strongly recommended. The number of applicants from any one institution will also be limited. The cost of the seminar is $275.
