A key element in the success of these awards is the help that you, the ALCTS member, provide in identifying colleagues whose accomplishments merit recognition. Juries appointed to select recipients for the awards are currently seeking nominations. A brief description of each award, along with relevant criteria for selection, appears below. The deadline for nominations and supporting documentation is December 1. The awards are: The Paul Banks and Carolyn Harris Preservation Award, a citation and $1,500 donated by Preservation Technologies, L.P., is a newly established award to be given for the first time in 2001. The award will be given to recognize the contribution of a professional preservation specialist who has been active in the field of preservation and/or conservation for library and /or archival materials. Blackwell's Scholarship Award, to honor the author or authors of the year's outstanding monograph, article, or original paper in the field of acquisitions, collection development, and related areas of resources development in libraries. Blackwell's will donate a $2,000 scholarship to the U.S. or Canadian library school of the winning author's choice. The scholarship will be given to a student concentrating in the acquisitions or collection development areas. Send nominations to October Ivins, E-mail: oivins@booktech.com, Booktech.com, 42 Cummings Park, Woburn, MA 01801; telephone 781/933-5400. ************ REQUEST FOR IN-DEPTH TESTERS OF CLASSIFICATION WEB The Cataloging Distribution Service (CDS) of the Library of Congress is seeking in-depth testers for a Pilot test of Classification Web, a service offering online access to the LC Classification files. The test will take place over a three-month period, beginning January 8, 2001 and ending March 30, 2001. The Classification Web Pilot will contain all approved LC classification schedules as of January 1, 2001. This includes A, B-BJ, BR-BX, C, DS-DX, E-F, H, J, K, KT tables, KD, KE, KF, KDZ, KG-KH, KJ-KKZ, KK-KKC, KJV-KJW, KZ, L, M, N, P-PA, PB-PH, PJ-PK, PN, PQ, PT, PR-PS & PZ, P-PTZ Tables, Q, R, S, T, U-V, and Z. Files will be updated weekly. Requirements for being an in-depth tester: 1. Be an institution that uses LC Classification to classify library materials and preferably also LC Subject Headings. 2. Has access to a Netscape browser version 4.x or Microsoft Explorer browser version 5.x or higher at participating staff workstations. 3. Be willing to use the Pilot service as part of regular work processes for the period of the three-month test. 4. Be willing to complete 3 interim and one final Web-based questionnaire. Pluses: 5. Institutions that have reference as well as technical service staff willing to test the product. 6. Willingness to participate in a one-time "stress test" where as many users as possible log on at one time. 7. Sites outside North America that use LC Classification are particularly encouraged to apply to assure proportionate feedback regarding access and response times. It is CDS's intent is to gather a representative group of testers to assess ease of use of service features, system dependability and response time, viability as both a reference and a technical services tool, and interest in Classification Web as a potential subscription-based product. The Classification Web Pilot will be available to all interested parties who sign on to the product Web site, but in-depth testers will have extended access to the complete data set beyond the conclusion of the test and receive a 20% discount on purchase of the production service or their choice of print Classification schedules of equivalent value. You can search for the title you want or review a list of all the approved and published NISO standards and technical reports. NISO is continuing its print publication program and will continue to sell the hardcopy standards. ************ CALL FOR PAPERS The RUSA/MOUSS Research & Statistics Committee is seeking research papers for presentation at ALA 2001, which cover the broad area of reference services such as user behavior, electronic services, reference effectiveness, and organizational structure and personnel. Both completed research and research in progress will be considered. All researchers, including reference practitioners from all types of libraries, library school faculty and students, and other interested individuals are encouraged to submit a proposal. The Committee will utilize a "blind" review process to select maximum of 3 projects for 25-minute presentations, followed by open discussion. Those selected are expected to present their papers in person at the Reference Research Forum. Criteria for selection are: Significance of the study for improving the quality of reference service. Quality and creativity of the methodology. Potential for research to fill a gap in reference knowledge or to build on previous studies. Previously published research or research accepted for publication by December 30, 2000 will not be acceptable. Deadline for receipt of proposals is December 30, 2000. Notification of acceptance will be made by March 15, 2001. The submission must consist of no more than 2 pages. On the first page, please list your name(s), title(s), institutional affiliation, mailing address, phone & fax numbers, and email address. The second page should NOT show your name or any personal information. Instead, it must include: The title of your project, an explicit statement of the research problem, a description of the research methodology used, an explanation of the significance of the research to reference services. Fax: (718) 636-3733 ************ ILIAC WORKSHOP 2001 Digital Resources and Digital Libraries: Opportunities for Cooperation The Annual International Workshop, "Electronic Resources and International Information Exchange: East-West," will be held March 12-13, in Washington, DC. The purpose of the Workshop is the exchange of information and ideas on crucial problems of digital resources and digital libraries development worldwide, particularly in NIS; their impact upon economy, science, culture, education and business; opportunities for international cooperation in thedigital environment, particularly USA-NIS cooperation and vice-versa; legal, ethical and security problems of digital information; other related topics will be discussed at the Workshop. CALL FOR PAPERS The Organizing Committee welcomes research and application oriented papers, which make new contributions to the topic of the Workshop or give an overview of the state of the art. You are invited to submit an abstract of your proposed paper in electronic form for consideration by the Program Committee. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is January 15, 2001. The following guidelines should be observed in the preparation and submission of your abstracts: 1. The abstract should not exceed 400 words. 2. The heading should include the title of your paper, followed by the names and affiliations of the author(s) and the name and address, FAX number and email address of the author who will be presenting the paper at the Workshop. 3. Upon acceptance of abstracts, authors will be required to forward a full copy of their papers, in writing, by February 15, 2001. Anticipated length of accepted papers will be no more than 6 A4 pages. 4.
