Questions or need help? -- send a note to U34261@UICVM. ************************************************************************* NATIONAL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION NETWORK (Editor's note: This is an except from the "ALA Washington Newsline," Vol. 8, No. 3, Monday, May 6, 1991.) Two House Science, Space, and Technology Subcommittees have approved a revised version of the High-Performance Computing Act of 1991. The Technology and Competitiveness Subcommittee acted on April 10 and the Science Subcommittee on April 17 on HR 656, which would establish a National Research and Education Network. Improvements in the bill include a number of elements requested by ALA, including NREN connections in every state; additional references to libraries (in the context of both access points for users and as information providers); references to education at all levels rather than higher education alone; additional input from user communities (including libraries); recognition of NREN as a vehicle for federal agency databases; and library and information science added to language concerning education and training in engineering and computer science. On the Senate side, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a hearing on April 11 on S. 343, which would have the Energy Department establish a Federal High-Performance Computer Network to serve many of the same purposes envisioned for the NREN. The lead witness was Sen. Albert Gore Jr. (D-TN), who again mentioned ALA in his testimony. How Sen.
