ALCTS Network News v18n10 (December 3, 1999) URL = http://hegel.lib.ncsu.edu/stacks/serials/ann/ann-v18n10.txt ALCTS NETWORK NEWS An electronic publication of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services Volume 18, Number 10 December 3, 1999 In this issue: E-MAIL UPGRADE AT ALA ALA GOPHER PHASED OUT NOMINEES FOR ALCTS DIVISION AND SECTION OFFICERS 2000 SANDRA DANFORD APPOINTED TEMPORARY DIRECTOR OF THE ALA FUND/DEVELOPMENT OFFICE NEW MEMBERS ROUNDTABLE (NMRT) SEEKS MENTORS ************ E-MAIL UPGRADE AT ALA Over the weekend of December 4-5, 1999, the American Library Association will be upgrading its e-mail reader systems. We will be moving to a newer version of our Novell GroupWise software that is Y2K compliant. We have been taking certain precautions, such as deleting e-mails that are no longer needed, archiving those still awaiting response or additional follow-up, and backing up the "address books," to ensure a smooth transition. If you send us e-mail between the end of business on Friday and the start of business Monday, there is some risk of non-receipt. For those messages you send beginning December 6, please be patient if you do not receive an immediate response--we may be "climbing the learning curve." (When we upgraded the same software about 2 years ago, it took a couple of days to settle in to the revised menu options and protocols.) ALA has also installed a new financial accounting system, which went live on December 1. This replaces an older system that was not Y2K compatible. --Karen Muller, LAMA Executive Director ALA GOPHER PHASED OUT On Saturday, December 4, 1999, ALA will cut over to a new, Y2K compliant Internet Server. The documents and files formerly maintained as part of the ALA gopher will not be transferred. However, key documents that were part of the ALCTS gopher files have been transferred to the appropriate location on the ALCTS web pages. This includes all back issues of AN2. Better yet, these back issues are now searchable within that page, so it will be possible to find an item distributed in a past issue. See http://www.ala.org/alcts/publications/an2/index.html. We have also tried to remove all links from other web pages to documents formerly resident on the gopher and sincerely hope we haven't missed any. Please report any such links you find so that we may eliminate them. (Please be aware, however, that we did not correct the information in the footers/"mastheads" of the back issues of AN2. We are treating that information as static, leaving it "as published" even though it is now inaccurate.) Other upgrades to the ALA communication environment include a new version of our list processor software, which will provide web-enabled access to list archives in the near future. NOMINEES FOR ALCTS DIVISION AND SECTION OFFICERS 2000 Following is the ballot for ALCTS Division and Section offices for the 2000 elections. Ballots will be mailed beginning March 3, 2000 to members whose membership is current on January 31, 2000. If you are a member (or a nominee) with a December (or earlier) expiration date, be sure to renew. The last day for petition candidates, for these or other offices, is February 4, 2000. She will begin December 1. Ms. Danforth has served the not-for-profit community as a development officer and consultant in fund raising and organizational development for sixteen years. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive. The Executive Board of the America Library Association (ALA) has voted to establish a Development Office to direct the fundraising functions for the Association. The in-house Development Office will replace The Fund for America's Libraries, which has been the fundraising body for the association since 1995. The board's decision was made during its fall meeting held November 5-7, 1999, at ALA Headquarters in Chicago. The board of the Fund for America's Libraries will convene shortly to formalize the ALA board action. ALA Executive Director William R. Gordon said the ALA executive board used the recent departures of the fund's executive and associate directors as an opportunity to review ALA's current fundraising activities and future direction. "The hard work of the Fund's dedicated board of directors over the last five years has facilitated the development of a network of supporters for ALA and America's libraries," Gordon noted. "The planned change in organizational structure for our fundraising unit will continue our strong ongoing relationships with our Champions, supporters and contributors. By bringing this function in house, the American Library Association will achieve greater coordination of fundraising activities by ALA and its units, consolidate the number of approaches to vendors and maximize our fundraising efforts." The Fund for America's Libraries was incorporated in April 1995 as an independent, nonprofit charitable foundation. It is governed by an interlocking board that includes the ALA president, president-elect, past-president and the ALA executive director. NEW MEMBERS ROUNDTABLE (NMRT) SEEKS MENTORS The ALA/NMRT mentoring co-chairs, Marilyn Tsirigotis and Jeff Bullington, welcomes ALCTS to serve as mentors. NMRT, of course, serves the needs of those new to ALA, including library science students, and currently, our program helps those persons feel comfortable with what can be an overwhelming experience (their first ALA conference). Mentees apply from all types of libraries and from every area of libraries. The NMRT website, www.ala.org/nmrt, contains an application for mentors/mentees from which we will match pairs as closely as we can. By agreeing to be a mentor, you will be helping a new professional or others have a positive conference experience, and we believe, want to become involved in a unit or roundtable. NMRT members are traditionally hard workers and very interested in developing leadership skills. Their committee is also looking at ways to mentor those persons who can not attend the conference and make the mentoring experience a longer lasting relationship than just conference. They are exploring the idea of tele-mentoring as well as forming regional networks in which pairs will be matched. If you or others from ALCTS want to mentor but can not be at the conference, perhaps one of the ideas above will be for you. Suggestions about how to expand the mentoring program are always welcome. Feel free to contact Marilyn Tsirigotis or Jeff Bullington with comments or questions and be sure to visit the NMRT website! --Marilyn Tsirigotis, Director, Harvin Clarendon County Library, 215 N.
