(*There are incumbent representatives to these sections who are eligible for renomination by ALA.) Nominations have to be placed before the appropriate ALCTS standing committee or section executive committees by the upcoming ALA Midwinter Meeting. Self-nomination is acceptable. Nominations are forwarded to the ALCTS International Relations Committee for review before going to the ALCTS Board of Directors for approval. The recommendations are then forwarded to the ALA International Relations Committee in the Spring. Any candidate for an IFLA Technical Services Committee should first consult the Guidelines for Section and Appointment of ALCTS Members to Represent ALCTS at International Meetings (http://www.ala.org/alcts/you/manual/international.html) for current ALCTS procedures; the IFLA reports of previous ALCTS representatives (http;//www.ala.org/alcts/you/ifla/index.html); and the IFLA Web site (http://www.ifla.org). The candidate should then complete a Request for Approval to Represent ALCTS at an International meeting form (http://www.ala.org/alcts/you/manual/forms/ircrep.html) and submit it to the Chair (or his or her designate) of the appropriate ALCTS Section by Friday, December 17. The Section Chair will notify the Chair of the ALCTS IRC of the nominations(s) and the Chair of the ALCTS IRC will notify the nominee(s) that the appropriate documentation has been received. NORTH AMERCIAN TITLE COUNT SEEKS SUBCOMMITTEE MEMBERS The ALCTS CMDS North American Title Count (NATC) subcommittee for the 2001 count will begin its work at ALA Midwinter in San Antonio. Volunteers are sought to fill three vacancies. A subcommittee of the CMDS Quantitative Measures committee, the NATC subcommittee is charged as follows: "To coordinate and direct the development and production of statistics on collections growth, by subject classification, for participating libraries at agreed-upon intervals and based upon the articulated needs to the membership of the Chief Collection Development officers of Large Research Libraries Discussion Group, and the Collection Development Librarians of academic Libraries Discussion Group." Reviewing the LC ranges used in the count for alteration/expansion; decisions about format; promoting use of the count; and reviewing/editing explanatory material are some typical tasks for committee members. Z39.50 TRAINING TUTORIAL: JANUARY 19, 2000, SAN ANTONIO NISO is sponsoring a one-day introductory tutorial about Z39.50/ISO 23950 on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 in San Antonio. The program is a basic introduction to the standard's history, functionality, and services. Details on the agenda and registration information are on the NISO website http://www.niso.org/z39wkshp.html or phone 301/654-2512. 2000 NASIG HORIZON AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT The North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) is seeking candidates for grants to attend the Fifteenth Annual Conference to be held at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) June 22-25, 2000. The purpose of the NASIG Horizon Award is to advance the serials profession by providing promising new serialists with the opportunity to accelerate their knowledge and understanding of serials by networking and interacting with a wide range of dedicated professionals working in all segments of the serials information chain. The award provides the recipient(s) with a firsthand introduction to NASIG by sponsoring attendance at the NASIG annual conference. NASIG will pay for all conference registration, housing, and travel costs. In addition, the recipient(s) will receive a year's free membership in NASIG and will be invited to serve on a NASIG committee the year following the award. A maximum of two awards will be given in 2000. Applicants must currently be in a position of a professional nature with primary responsibilities for some aspect of serials, e.g. head of serials, serials acquisitions, serials vendor, serials publisher. Applicants must have served in this position for no more than three years at the time of the application deadline and must not have been in a professional library or library-related position (e.g. book vendor, publisher) for more than five years at the time of the application deadline. Applicants must not have attended any previous NASIG conferences. Applicants do not have to be a member of NASIG. Preference will be given to applicants employed by a North American organization or institution, and to those whose career goals include professional growth and development in serials. The deadline for applications is February 16, 2000. The award recipients will be notified by April 1. Phone: (801) 378-6730, Fax: (801) 378-3221 or (801) 378-6708, E-mail: Pat_Frade@byu.edu CCAHA ANNOUNCES ARCHITECTURAL RECORDS CONFERENCE IN PHILADELPHIA, PA The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts and the National Park Service Museum Management Program are cosponsoring a three-day conference on the management of architectural records, Wednesday, May 3 through Friday, May 5, 2000, at The Athenaeum of Philadelphia. The goal of this conference is to improve practices for preserving, managing, and providing access to documentation of our built heritage. Speakers will address the challenges involved in managing architectural records collections, on both theoretical and practical levels, through keynote addresses, lectures, case studies, demonstrations, and tours. Participants will learn about the significance of architectural records; the array of materials and methods used to create them, from the earliest processes to those in use today; collecting policies; appraisal; intellectual control; preventive and remedial preservation measures; access methods; fundraising; legal issues, including copyright in the online environment; and efforts to ensure that the electronic record of the architecture of the late 20th century and beyond will endure in usable form for future study. This conference is intended for archivists, librarians, curators, historic preservation officers, records managers, historians, and architects who are involved in collecting, preserving, and providing access to architectural, landscape, and historic preservation records in archives, libraries, museums, historic sites, historical societies, and architectural firms. Awards of up to $500 will be made to defray travel, lodging, and registration costs for up to 20 individuals. To be eligible, individuals must work with architectural records that are available to the public in non-profit institutions with annual budgets of $250,000 or less.
