ALCTS Network News v18n08 (November 23, 1999) URL = http://hegel.lib.ncsu.edu/stacks/serials/ann/ann-v18n08.txt ALCTS NETWORK NEWS An electronic publication of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services Volume 18, Number 8 November 23, 1999 In this issue: INTERNATIONAL FUNDING AVAILABLE PRINCIPLES FOR NISO CIRCULATION INTERCHANGE PROTOCOL -- REVIEW REQUESTED KUDOS TO CC:DA: A PUBLIC THANK YOU LAST CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2000 ALCTS AWARDS INTERNATIONAL FUNDING AVAILABLE The ALCTS International Relations Committee (IRC) again has a budget of $5,000 to support the travel of ALCTS members to appropriate international meetings for the purpose of representing the interests and concerns of the ALCTS membership. Traditionally, this funding has gone to support travel to IFLA Conferences. However, again this year, the IRC has recommended to the ALCTS Board of Directors that $1,000 of the $5,000 be set aside for international travel other than to IFLA Conferences and the Board has approved. Therefore, I would like to announce the availability of these funds for international travel other than to IFLA Conferences. The procedure of requesting funds, however, will be identical to that of requesting funds for IFLA Conferences. 1)The requester must be a member in good standing of ALCTS and the ALCTS Section s/he will be representing at the international meeting or activity. 2) The requester is to fill out the appropriate form that is to be used when requesting funding for international travel. The form can be found at http://www.ala.org/alcts/you/manual/forms/ircfunding.html. 3) The requester then submits this form, along with a short description of the meeting, to the Chair (or his or her designate) of the appropriate ALCTS Section. 4) The Section Chair (or his or her designate) has the responsibility of polling the Section's Executive Committee for its support of the candidate. 5) Once support has been approved, the Section Chair signs the form, and forwards it to the Chair of the IRC. 6) The IRC reviews the request, and pending approval, submits it to the ALCTS Board of Directors with a recommended dollar amount. 7) When the Board approves the request, the individual is notified of ALCTS' support and the amount allocated. 8) In accepting ALCTS funding, the candidate is required to submit a report of the meeting or activity to the appropriate ALCTS Section, the IRC, and the ALCTS Board. Requests that are received that need quick action will be handled electronically. Funding requests for the 2000 IFLA Conference in Jerusalem should also be made at this time. PRINCIPLES FOR NISO CIRCULATION INTERCHANGE PROTOCOL -- REVIEW REQUESTED In late 1998, NISO (National Information Standards Organization) appointed a standards committee (Committee AT) to define the various transactions needed to support circulation activities among independent library systems. Such activities might support direct borrowing among members of a consortium, or the automation of the interface between a library's interlibrary loan and local circulation system. The Committee has worked actively over the last ten months. As a first step, the Committee developed a set of principles and guidelines that it will use in drafting the full standard. This document is available on the NISO Web site http://www.niso.org/drafts/Z3982v1.html. A form for submitting comments is available and referenced at the end of the document http://ladenton.com/niso/comment.html. The Committee invites comments from all interested parties between now and November 30, 1999. Members of the Committee will review comments as they are received, and all comments will be discussed at the Committee's December 12-14, 1999 meeting in San Diego, CA. The document includes a timeline for work and a schedule of meetings. Further background information on the Committee and meeting minutes are available on the NISO web site http://www.niso.org/commitat.html. --Robert Allen Daugherty, rad@uic.edu or phone: 312/996-2734. KUDOS TO CC:DA: A PUBLIC THANK YOU Congratulations and thanks are in order to the members of CC:DA and four CC:DA task forces for their hard work and for all that the committee achieved since meeting in New Orleans. The committee worked hard to complete several key projects before the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR (JSC) meeting just held in Brisbane, Australia. Special thanks go to Martha Yee (TF on Rule 0.24), Lynne Howarth (ISBD(ER)), Joan Schuitema and Phil Schreur (Delsey report) and Wayne Jones (Hirons report) for their excellent leadership as task force chairs. John Attig helped with the editing of the final versions of the task force reports and with making the reports available on the Web so quickly. John did an incredible amount of work for CC:DA, and we could never have accomplished all that we did without John's help. ALCTS is very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of people working to improve our cataloging rules. ALA made a significant contribution to the JSC meeting in Brisbane. -- Daniel Kinney (dkinney@notes.cc.sunysb.edu) LAST CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2000 ALCTS AWARDS Nominations are being sought for seven awards to be presented by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services.
