The group decided to continue this discussion focusing on what other cooperative groups are doing internationally and how cooperative programs in the U.S. can participate with international groups. Representatives from all types of cooperative groups are encouraged to attend. If you are not able to attend, the group would like national and international cooperative groups to provide brief descriptions and announcements of current and future international preservation projects. In addition, any comments or suggestions on how cooperative preservation programs in the U.S. can participate with international groups would be welcome. Please submit announcements and your comments to the discussion group Chair, Sharla Richards, AMIGOS Preservation Field Service Officer at srichard@amigos.org or 1-800-843-8482. Does an institution exist that can afford the time and money necessary to use Japanese paper and paste on all their materials? Does anyone want to? Can we afford not to? And what about those glossy journals? Is anyone happy with the heat-set tissues currently available? Are they any better than or equivalent to "archival" tape? What would be ideal? And what keeps us from that ideal? What alternative(s) do we have? At PQ&TDG, we will explore the topic of mending paper-based materials in general circulating collections. The session will include brief overviews of the composition and history of pressure sensitive tapes and heat-set tissue, and we will seek, in small discussion groups, to grapple with the questions raised above by sharing our experiences and evaluating our repair strategies. -- Ethel Hellman (eh104@umail.umd.edu) CCS Cataloging Norms Discussion Group Saturday, June 26, 9:30-11:00 a.m. Participants will be treated to presentations on the following timely topics: A status report on LC's pinyin conversion project (Philip Melzer, LC Pinyin Task Group Chair) A summary of the Friday night ALCTS CCS SAC forum on form headings/subdivisions (Mary Charles Lasater, SAC Subcommittee Chair) Local procedures for cataloging and accessing electronic journals and websites (Manuel Urrizola, University of California, Irvine) Time will be allowed for discussion. Volunteer to be a BETA-TESTER!!! Speakers: Diane Vizine-Goetz, Research Scientist, Office of Research, OCLC Online Computer Library Center. Cheryl C. Term is for two years, election to be held at the business meeting following the discussion. -- Greta de Groat (gdegroat@sulmail.stanford.edu) ALCTS Newspaper Users Discussion Group Saturday, June 26, 1999, 2:00-4:00 p.m. The United States Newspaper Program is a cooperative national effort among the states and the federal government to locate, catalog, and preserve US newspapers on microfilm. Preservation microfilming of newspapers from someone else's collection involves much more that selecting, borrow, and microfilming * delicate negotiation looms behind nearly every title. Robert Dowd, New York State Newspaper Project Coordinator, will present a perspective entitled "Why you cannot microfilm my newspapers; Let me enumerate the reasons" to jump-start dialogue at the discussion group. Additional agenda items can be suggested ahead of time (contact Bob Dowd directly) or brought up for consideration at the meeting. --Bob Dowd (rcdowd@unix2.nysed.gov) CCS Catalog Management Discussion Group Saturday, June 26, 1999, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Topic: Vended Authority Control: Issues and Options Like many library operations, authority control can be accomplished in-house or it can be contracted to one of several vendors specializing in such work. The authority control services currently on the market range from those that provide routine batch processing of a library's bibliographic records against the Library of Congress authority files, to those that offer a variety of customized options for record processing and delivery. Join us for a facilitated, wide-ranging discussion of some of the key considerations in a decision to contract with a vendor for authority control services, including (1) determining which bibliographic records, and which headings on those bibliographic records, can and will be processed by the vendor, (2) accommodating local practices, such as series tracing decisions, in a vended authority control process, and (3) creating detailed specifications, re-designing cataloging and other workflows, and determining necessary changes in local staffing requirements. Discussion group participants can expect to gain a better understanding of many of the critical decisions that need to be made when contracting with a vendor for authority control services. An election for CMDG Vice-chair/Chair-elect will take place at the end of the meeting. -- Stephen Skuce (skuce@mit.edu) CMDS Collection Development Librarians of Academic Libraries Discussion Group Saturday, June 26, 1999, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Topic: Books on a screen: variety and prospects of electronic books. Discussion Leaders: Brian Stern, General Manager, netLibrary.com; Robert Nardini, Vice President, YBP; Dennis Dillon, Head of Collections and Information Resources, University of Texas at Austin. -- Chris Filstrup (chris_filstrup@ncsu.edu) SS Research Libraries Discussion Group joint meeting with SS Journal Pricing Discussion Group Saturday, June 26, 1999, 2:00-4:00 p.m. The discussion groups are holding a joint meeting to discuss the complex choices that exist in the information marketplace as we transition from print to electronic and as the cost of serials continue to rise. Rick Johnson, SPARC Enterprise Director, will speak about the role that SPARC is playing in the information marketplace for libraries and publishers. -- Lisa Macklin (lisa.macklin@library.gatech.edu) ************ ALCTS NETWORK NEWS (ISSN 1056-6694) is published irregularly by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association.
