Kranich defeated C. James Schmidt, university librarian at San Jose (Calif.) State University, in the election. Kranich received 6,138 votes. Jim Schmidt received 3,442 votes. As president of ALA, Kranich will be the chief elected officer for the oldest and largest library organization in the world. Founded in 1876, ALA has a membership of nearly 57,000 librarians and library supporters. Its mission is to promote the highest quality library services and public access to information. Kranich will serve as president-elect for 1999-2000 and will assume the presidency in July of 2000 at the end of the ALA Conference in Chicago. She will serve a one-year term as president. "I am thrilled to lead ALA into the 21st century," Kranich said. "Now more than ever we face serious threats to public access and the free flow of ideas. As ALA president I will focus my efforts to ensure that we have the will--and the means--to act decisively to fight for First Amendment and fair use rights. Kranich is chair of ALA's Committee on Legislation. She is a former member of the ALA Executive Board and Council. She established the Coalition on Government Information and hosted the annual James Madison Awards honoring champions of the public's right to know. She speaks and writes frequently on topics related to digital libraries, the Internet, freedom of information, government information and telecommunications policy, fees for library service, evaluation of library services and legislative action for librarians. Kranich is convener of New York State's Comprehensive Research Libraries Group. She was named a "Young Visionary Leader" at the ALA President's Program in 1988 and served as a mentor at the Snowbird Leadership Institute in 1990 and 1992. Kranich previously worked at the Bridgeport and Windsor (Conn.) Public Libraries, the Madison (Wis.) Public Library and the University of Wisconsin Memorial Library. She received her master's degree in public administration from New York University, master's in library science from the University of Wisconsin and bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin. The following were chosen president-elect of the ALA divisions: Harriet S. Selverstone, American Association of School Librarians; Lizabeth "Betsy" Wilson, Association of College and Research Libraries; Carlen M. Ruschoff, Association for Library Collections & Technical Services; Virginia A. Walter, Association for Library Service to Children; G. Victor Johnson, first vice-president/president-elect, and Ellen G. Miller, second vice-president/president-elect, American Library Trustee Association; Donna O. Dziedzic, Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies; Jeanne Thorsen, Library Administration and Management Association; Sara L. Randall, Library and Information Technology Association; Kay K. Runge, Public Library Association; Catherine R. Friedman, Reference and User Services Association; and Mary J. Arnold, Young Adult Library Services Association. Twenty-six councilors-at-large were elected. Seventeen will serve from 1999 to 2003. Eight will serve from 1999 to 2002 and one will serve from 1999 to 2001. Those elected to serve from 1999-2003 are: Sue Berlin, John W. Berry, Kathy A. East, Mario M. Gonzalez, Janet Swan Hill, Patricia M. Hogan, Robert P. Holley, Barbara Froling Immroth, Bonnie Kunzel, Donald J. Sager, Maria B. Salvadore, Mary Augusta Thomas, Susan M. Veltfort, Andrew A.Venable, Blanche Woolls, Peter R. Young and Nancy P. Zimmerman. Councilors who will serve from 1999-2002 are: Herbert Biblo, Florence Simkins Brown, Christine Lind Hage, Charles E.
