The committee would like to have at least two people staffing the booth during all hours of operation. It's a good opportunity to meet new people and spread the word about the benefits of ALCTS membership. It's fun too! The booth will be open from 9 am-5 pm on Saturday, June 26, through Monday, June 28, and from 9 am-3 pm on Tuesday, June 29. Volunteer now and get the time slots that work best for you! Most businesses around the Federal Triangle will be closed to keep traffic to a minimum and provide security for the NATO presidents, prime ministers, and heads of 23 governments. -- Ernest Martin (emartin@ala.org) ************ THIRD ONLINE CONFERENCE OF THE CONGRESS ON PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 23RD The Steering Committee for the Congress on Professional Education invites your participation in the third online conference to discuss issues relevant to the Congress. The conference is scheduled for Friday, April 23, 1999, 4-5:30 p.m. CDT. Edward Erazo of Florida Atlantic University and chair of the Issues in the Profession working group will lead the discussion on Professional Concerns. The three broad topics that will be used to start the discussion are: 1)shared values of the profession, 2) shared vision of the profession, and 3)shared concerns of the profession. It is a verbatim translation of the Program overview and may be accessed by clicking on the highlighted "Pulse aqui" on the main PCC home page (http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/pcc). The Spanish language material on the PCC will be used, in a condensed form, to develop a color brochure to publicize the PCC and its component programs as the Program reaches out to Latin America and other Spanish speaking library communities. Copies of this brochure will be made available to PCC members who might have occasion to travel to Latin America for conferences or meetings or who attend conferences whose audience are comprised of predominantly Spanish speaking librarians (e.g., SALALM, IFLA). Byrum, Jr. (jbyr@loc.gov) ************ SOLINET PRESERVATION CONFERENCE New Strategies for Regional Disaster Mitigation and Response, a preservation conference will be presented by SOLINET on Wednesday, April 28, 1999 from 9:00 am-4:00 pm at the Sheraton Colony Square Hotel, Atlanta, GA. This conference provides a forum for issues in regional disaster preparedness and response. The goal is to provide participants with a framework for planning disaster response in their communities, including information about relevant state, regional, and national resources available to assist in planning and response. Conference speakers are: Darryl Barksdale, Planner and Grant Administrator, Georgia State Historic Preservation Office; Hilary A. Kaplan, Conservator, Georgia Department of Archives and History and Director, Southeast Regional Conservation Association (SERCA); John Ketchum, Program Coordinator, FEMA; Kent Kocher, Local Government Assistance Coordinator, Mississippi Department of Archives & History; Lynn Wampler, City Administrator for Fayetteville, Tennessee, a Project Impact Community; Jane Long, Director, National Task Force on Emergency Response, Heritage Preservation; Frank Willis, Mayor of Florence, South Carolina, a Project Impact Community. The registration fee is $100. The fee covers refreshment breaks; lunch is not included. The registration deadline is extended to Wednesday, April 21, 1999. Form more information contact Andy Jones (andy_jones@solinet.net) -- Alicia Riley-Walden (ariley@solinet.net) ************ COLLECTING AND SAFEGUARDING ORAL TRADITIONS: AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE A four-day Conference will be held on the theme of "Collecting and Safeguarding Oral Traditions" in Khon Kaen, Northern Thailand, from 16-19 August 1999. This Conference is open to all with an interest in the preservation of oral traditions. It has been organized as a Satellite Meeting of the General Conference of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Within the context of the UNESCO "Memory of the World" Program, the Conference will deal with various aspects of collecting and safeguarding oral heritage, including the socio-cultural context; collection methodologies and selection criteria; care, handling, storage and preservation issues; and technical matters. Included in the Conference will be an excursion to the Research Institute of Northeastern Arts and Culture and the Sirindhorn Isan Information Center (Mahasarakham, Thailand), an academic resource centre with comprehensive information related to all aspects of northeastern Thai cultures. The Seminar venue will be the Khon Kaen Sofitel Hotel. Special rates have been arranged, beginning with US$45 per night. There are frequent flights between Khon Kaen and Bangkok. It is highly recommended to all with an interest in the preservation of oral traditions. Participation in theis conference can be easily combined with attending IFLA's General Conference at Bangkok, August 20-28, 1999.
