NORTHEAST DOCUMENT CONSERVATION CENTER PROGRAMS ALCTS PUBLISHES "1997 NORTH AMERICAN TITLE COUNT" MINITEX SYMPOSIUM AROUND ALA ************ DEADLINE NEARING FOR CATALOGING NOW! ALCTS and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) along with co-sponsors SUNY/ OCLC and the Queens Borough Public Library, Flushing Branch will sponsor a one day institute titled "Cataloging Now!," to be held at the Flushing Library, Flushing, NY, on April 16, 1999. The registration deadline is April 1, 1999. PCC has developed and is introducing new "core standards" as a means of increasing the pool of mutually acceptable records available for copy cataloging, so that catalogers can use their time and expertise for original cataloging. The goal is increased quality cataloging records, rich enough in content to be used with little or no local modification, yet reasonable enough to be generated in greater numbers. Faculty include Beacher Wiggins, Library of Congress; Colleen Hyslop, Michigan State University; Michael Kaplan, Indiana University; and Kate Harcourt, Columbia University. Registration fees for Cataloging Now! are $125.00 for ALCTS or SUNY/OCLC Members, $175.00 for ALA Members, and $225.00 for Non-members. Please bring your own lunch. For registration information contact Yvonne A. McLean at 800/545-2433, ext. 5032 or e-mail ymclean@ala.org. An electronic brochure is available at the ALCTS website: http://www.ala.org/alcts/events/institutes/suny.html. ************ ALCTS PUBLISHES "1997 NORTH AMERICAN TITLE COUNT" ALCTS has published the 1997 North American Title Count. The Count is conducted every four years by a subcommittee of the Quantitative Measures for Collection Management Committee within the Collection Management and Development Section (CMDS) of ALCTS. The 1997 Count was produced by the Library Research Center (LRC) of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In the past, the Count was known as the National Shelflist Count, but after 1989 the name was changed to more accurately reflect the nature of the data, which included a number of Canadian libraries, and which no longer was strictly a "shelflist" count. The 1997 Title Count is the first to be produced in a largely electronic environment, and the first to appear only in an electronic format--on CD-ROM. It is designed for many libraries to use as a method of measuring collections and providing relational data in single and multiple institutional settings. It also allows libraries to provide a structure and a source of preliminary information for collection management evaluating and coordinating. The 55 participants in this year's Count include academic libraries of all sizes, as well as federal and special libraries. The call number range list for 1997 includes 14 changes or expansions from the 1993 LC call number range list, and 2 new ranges; these are given in Appendix II. Data are also arranged according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classification used by many libraries. The 1997 North American Title Count (ISBN 0-8389-7985-8) may be purchased for $185.00 from ALA Order Fulfillment, 155 N. Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60606. ************ NORTHEAST DOCUMENT CONSERVATION CENTER PROGRAMS School for Scanning: Issues of Preservation and Access for Paper-Based Collections will be held June 2-4, 1999, at the Chicago Historical Society, Chicago, IL.
