Two bylaws provisions will govern the selection of a replacement. "Article X. Sections Section 8. Executive Committee. Subsection (2) Vacancies. Vacancies in the elected membership of the Executive Committee shall be filled as follows: ... (c) Secretary and members-at-large of the Executive Committee. If the office of secretary or a member-at-large becomes vacant, a secretary or member-at-large, as the case may be, shall be appointed by the Executive Committee to serve until a replacement is elected at the next election to complete the unexpired term. (d) General provisions. If the successful candidate for an elective office dies or withdraws between the close of nominations and the adjournment of the annual conference, the resulting situation shall be considered as a vacancy having occurred during the term for which that candidate was elected." O'Neill has resigned within the time frame cited in paragraph (d), so this is a vacancy to be filled according to (c). The Serials Section Executive Committee will be identifying someone to serve as Member-at-Large for a one-year term, 1998-99, and the SS Nominating Committee working to identify a slate for the 1999 elections will be identifying candidates not only for the 1999-2002 term which would normally have become vacant, but also for the remainder of the term to which O'Neill was elected, 1999-2001. These provisions ensure that the terms of office remain staggered so that an even number of officers rotate off the Executive Committee each year. ************ LONG VOTED ALA PRESIDENT-ELECT Sarah Ann Long has been elected vice-president/president-elect of ALA with 5,712 votes.
