If you are interested in serving on any of the committees listed below, please fill out a volunteer form and return it to ALCTS headquarters, or get in touch with ALCTS President Janet Swan Hill at hilljs@colorado.edu or (303) 492-3797. The committee volunteer form is on the at www.ala.org/alcts/you/vol.html; there will also be forms available at the ALCTS office in New Orleans. DUPLICATES EXCHANGE UNION. This committee exists to facilitate the exchange of duplicate library materials among institutions participating in the program. The Duplicates Exchange Union Committee has one remaining vacancy. If you are employed in an institution that participates in the program, please include this information on your volunteer form, or in your e-mail message. FUNDRAISING. Seeking outside funding to defray part of the cost of programs, pre-conferences, institutes, and the like, has become increasingly important to ALCTS' ability to stage high-quality offerings, but the committees that plan them are usually appointed for their expertise in the subject, not their skills in fundraising. This year the ALCTS Board has approved formation of a new committee to provide guidance, to coordinate, and to assist in necessary fundraising efforts. LEGISLATION. The purpose of this committee is to make recommendations to the ALCTS Board about legislation (needed, proposed, or enacted) relevant to the Division's areas of responsibility, to inform ALCTS members about legislative issues, and to cooperate with other ALA legislation groups as appropriate. There is one vacancy remaining on the Legislation Committee. ************ ALCTS AND PCC SPONSOR CATALOGING NOW! WORKSHOPS The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has developed a new "core standard." The PCC is introducing the core standard as a means of increasing the pool of mutually acceptable records for copy cataloging, allowing catalog librarians to use their time and expertise for original cataloging. To promote the standard ALCTS and the PCC Standing Committee on Training are sponsoring workshops that will introduce catalog librarians, catalog department and technical services administrators, and public service librarians to the values of the PCC and the rationale behind the core record. In separate breakout sessions catalog librarians will learn about creating core records, administrators will be introduced to the management and training of catalogers in this new environment, and public services librarians will consider the implications of core records available in OPACs. The first workshop is tentatively planned for the South or Southwest this spring. The second of these workshops has been scheduled for July 10, 1998, in Anaheim, California, as a preconference to the annual conference of the American Association of Law Libraries. Other sites and dates are to be determined. Visit the ALCTS web site at www.ala.org/alcts/events/index.html for information and registration as they become available. ************ DISCUSSION GROUP TOPICS AT MIDWINTER VII There will be one more issue of AN2 before the Midwinter Meeting in New Orleans. PRESERVATION ADMINISTRATION Saturday, January 10, 9:00-12:00, RAD-Grand Ballroom A Topics: Five topics will be presented: the relevance of conservation to modern libraries; the Digital Library Federation; IFLA Preservation sessions; microfilming brittle books identified through use; and an update on developments at the NEH's Division of Preservation and Access. -- John F. Dean, jfd5@cornell.edu and Winston Atkins, winston_atkins@ncsu.edu JOURNAL COSTS IN LIBRARIES Saturday, January 10, 2:00-4:00, NOCC-59 Topic: Prix Fixe or a la Carte: the Package Deal Many of today's information providers--publishers, aggregators, vendors--offer library consumers electronic access to a plethora of publications. In some cases, library consumers are allowed to select, on a title-by-title basis, which items are appropriate for their constituents. In other cases, they are offered a choice of prepackaged titles. In still others, both options, package and title-by-title selection, are offered. What are the advantages to package deals and do they outweigh the library's ability to pick and choose? Under which circumstances is one approach preferable to the other? Join the Journal Costs in Libraries Discussion Group as we set the stage for a lively debate. A panel of three librarians, a publisher and a vendor/aggregator will each take about 10 minutes to prepare for audience participation by presenting varying viewpoints on the benefits and pitfalls of the package deal. The ensuing discussion offers you the opportunity to voice your take on these packages and to provide immediate feedback to your service providers and/or to your clients.
