At the 1996 ALA Annual Conference, the ALCTS Commercial Technical Services Committee sponsored a preconference and a program on outsourcing, with part of these presentations repeated for a special forum on outsourcing at the 1997 Midwinter Meeting. The same committee has also collaborated on a book, _Outsourcing Library Technical Services Operations: Practices in Public, Academic, and Special Libraries_, which will be published by ALA in a few weeks. In order to provide additional support for librarians faced with management decisions that might involve outsourcing, ALCTS is making some of the handouts from the preconference, program, and forum available on web site. These include a general discussion of outsourcing, "Planning and Implementing an Outsourcing Program," by Karen W. Wilson, Head Technical Services Librarian/Assistant, J. Hugh Jackson Library, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. This is supplemented by a table that includes a selection of acquisitions and collection development services and the cataloging, physical processing, and preservation services available from commercial vendors, matched with the scope of vendor services programs available; a set of pros and cons of outsourcing, and a select bibliography. These will be updated from time to time as new information becomes available. The outsourcing documents are available at http://www.ala.org/alcts/now and Fax-on-Demand, 800-545-2433, press 8. ************ JOINT STEERING COMMITTEE ESTABLISHES DISCUSSION LIST The Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR (JSC) has established an open electronic discussion list to facilitate an exchange of ideas on the topics under consideration at the International Conference on the Principles and Future Development of AACR to be held in Toronto, Canada on October 23-25, 1997. The conference papers will be posted as they are received. They are available on the JSC Web site at: http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/jsc/confpap.htm Discussion list participants are encouraged to consider and respond to issues raised in the conference papers. It is anticipated that feedback arising from this forum will be taken into account by the speakers and conference participants as part of their preparation for the conference. Information on the discussion list follows: AACRCONF is an unmoderated list. AACRCONF submissions are being archived. The listowner can be contacted at: AACRCONF-REQUEST@INFOSERV.NLC-BNC.CA as well as at: AACRCONF-COORD@NLC-BNC.CA To post items to the list, send messages to: AACRCONF@INFOSERV.NLC-BNC.CA ************ MARY GHIKAS NAMED ALA ACTING DIRECTOR Mary Ghikas, associate executive director ALA, has been named acting executive director of the organization. Ghikas assumed the position on August 1, the effective date of former Executive Director Elizabeth Martinez' resignation. The appointment was made during the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco. Ghikas was hired in March of 1995 as associate executive director for Members Programs and Services, one of two departments developed by Martinez as part of staff reorganization. In her current capacity, Ghikas coordinates the work of all divisions, conference services, membership development, chapter relations, round tables, and the awards program. Before working for ALA, Ghikas headed an independent, nonprofit consortium of libraries and library systems in western New York. The consortium included three public library systems, six school library systems, 27 academic libraries, and 61 special libraries.
