Endorsed the strategic directions of the report of the Task Force on the Use of Electronic Communications, thus committing to: embrace electronic communication as a valuable tool in support of its services to the membership, recognize and encourage the use of electronic communication via the Internet as an approved method for conducting committee work, membership activities, and general publicity, and accelerate its program for electronic publishing to disseminate the work of its members and to improve access to the literature of library collections and technical services. Approved the Guidelines for Standardized Cataloging of Children's Materials, as revised 1997. Directed the Catalog Form and Function Committee (CFF) to develop Web tutorials on specific topics (such as the Dublin Core and resource locators) and to monitor the environment for activities on metadata and meta access. Disbanded the Task Force on Meta Access (originally known as the Task Force to Define Bibliographic Access in the Electronic Environment) and the Task Force on the Use of Electronic Communications with thanks. Requested the CCS Subject Analysis Committee to move assertively in organizing subcommittees to investigate issues of Metadata Subject Analysis and Classification of Digital Resources, and to develop a plan for promoting the use of existing classificatory frameworks (such as DDC, LC, NLM) to indexing and cataloging agencies, and the CCS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA) to evaluate the Dublin Core and other Metadata encoding schema and recommend courses of action or implementation. Adopted Memorial Resolutions honoring C. Summer Spaulding and Charlotta Hensley, directing the ALCTS Councilor to submit them to the ALA Council. Endorsed the "Principles for Licensing Electronic Resources," prepared by a working group of representatives from the American Association of Law Libraries, the American Library Association, the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, the Association of Research Libraries, the Medical Library Association, and the Special Libraries Association. Forwarded the Resolution on the NEH, prepared by the Preservation and Reformatting Section, to the ALA Legislation Committee. Thanked Edward Swanson, first editor of the ALCTS Papers Series for his development of the first eight numbers in the series and his service for two terms as editor of the series; and thanked Richard Smiraglia for his service as editor of Library Resources & Technical Services, for two terms, 1990-1996. Approved electronic publication of A Selected Bibliography for Library Acquisitions, 4th ed., by Barbara Hall (URL: http://www.ala.org/alcts/publications/acqbib.html). Added the entire balance in the spending portion of the ALCTS Endowment to the Endowment principal, as recommended by the Budget and Finance Committee, and approved the FY 97/98 budget. Directed the Program Committee to provide the Budget and Finance Committee, beginning at the 1998 Midwinter Meeting, with a summary of all ALCTS programs planned for the following Annual Conference and their associated costs. Accepted the slate of programs for the 1998 Annual Conference as recommended by the ALCTS Program Committee, including co-sponsorship as indicated. Changed the name of the ALCTS/Blackwell North America Scholarship Award to ALCTS/Blackwell's Scholarship Award. Returned the consideration of the charges for the Electronics Communication Committee and the Metadata Committee to the Organization and Bylaws Committee. Directed the Publications Committee to develop a plan for discontinuing the ALCTS Newsletter in print form as soon as possible, and to report back to the Board at Midwinter, with a draft of the plan. Voted to pursue with LAMA leadership a joint committee at the section level to combine the LAMA SASS Technical Services Committee and the ALCTS AS Technology for Acquisitions Committee. Established the Fundraising Committee with the following charge: To advise the ALCTS Board of Directors on fundraising goals and priorities that support the division's strategic plan and five-year financial plan, and obtain fiscal, and other support for them. To develop relationships between ALCTS and the commercial and private sectors, and to obtain fiscal and other support from them, for ALCTS programs and activities. To develop a divisional fundraising plan that encompasses the activities and goals of the Budget and Finance, Membership, and Program Committees. To develop a recognition program for vendors and individuals who contribute to ALCTS cash, in-kind, and other gifts. To develop procedures for working with the ALCTS office for coordination of these activities. ************ ALA RE-OPENS SEARCH FOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WITH REVISED AD As previously announced, ALA has re-opened the search for an executive director. The following is the revised advertisement for that position.
