We will publish results of the election for Council members in the next issue. ************ ALCTS ORIENTATION FOR NEW CHAIRS SET If you are a newly elected or appointed ALCTS officer or committee/discussion group chair, you are urged to attend the orientation to be held on Sunday morning, June 29, from 9:30 to 11 in the San Francisco Marriott, Golden Gate C1. This meeting, sponsored by the ALCTS Leadership Committee, will provide valuable information for you as you begin service to ALCTS and to the profession. You will receive the tools you need -- or learn where to find them -- in order to make your volunteer efforts rewarding, fulfilling, and as smooth-running as possible. Heads of Technical Services of Medium-Sized Academic Libraries Saturday, June 28, 9:30-12:30, Grand Hyatt Hotel, Farallon Room Topic: Technical Services Redesign Revisited: Librarian/Vendor Perspectives Part One: Catherine Tierney (Stanford Univ.) will present an update on Stanford's Redesign Project, touching on such issues as workflow reconfiguration, staff reallocation, outsourcing, and the effect of implementing a new automated system on the redesign process. Lee Leighton (Berkeley) and Cecily Johns (UC/Santa Barbara) will discuss the progress of redesign at their libraries. A general Q&A/discussion period will follow the presentations. Part Two: Representative from four vendors (Bob Schatz, Academic Book Center; Jeff Calcagno, Blackwell North America; Marda Johnson, OCLC; and Lynne Branche Brown, Yankee Book Peddler) will react to the librarians' comments and present their views on the implications of redesign. Their focus will includes changes in library/vendor and vendor/vendor relationships, how the move toward outsourcing is changing vendor operations, and changes in pricing models. General discussion will follow. Part II: Solutions. Libraries, vendors and publishers are facing major changes and additional responsibilities and challenges with the advent of electronic publishing. At our meeting in February, many issues on this topic were raised by the speakers and by the audience. In San Francisco, we will hear speakers from OCLC and Tufts University presenting a survey of various solutions available to deal with some of the issues we raised at ALA Midwinter. Some of these issues include: selection, training, payment, licensing, archiving, maintenance, security, management, etc. Automated Acquisitions/In-Process? Monday, June 30, 9:30-11, Hilton - Continental Ballroom 3 Topic: Acquiring and Managing Electronic Journals: Integrated Work Load or Special Handling?" Speakers: Lisa Macklin, Head of Serials Control at Georgia Institute of Technology, and Marie Gillies, Manager Of Operations with Swets & Zeitlinger, Inc., will lead this discussion on how libraries are acquiring electronic journals and absorbing them into their library's serials work flow. Come and share your experiences and ideas about maintaining and managing access, licensing agreements, copyrights, and archiving this format in your libraries. ************ VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO STAFF THE ALCTS BOOTH AT ALA Carol and I are asking for your help with staffing the NEW ALCTS booth during the San Francisco Conference. This year the division membership booths will have a different look and LOCATION. There will be a division booth area for the 11 ALA divisions, each having equal space. The booth area is in the South Lobby, Moscone Center, next to the ALA store, at the entrance to the exhibits. A great location!! We need one or two people per shift.
