Somerville, president of ALA, announced today that the association will continue its search for a new executive director. "I regret to announce that we were not able to reach an agreement with either of the top two candidates," Somerville said. The Executive Board had launched a search for a new executive director last fall to replace Elizabeth Martinez, who announced her resignation at the end of her contract on August 15, 1997. Somerville said the position will be readvertised and that the Boyden Executive Search Consultants will continue to handle the executive director search. She said an acting director would be appointed. ************ SIGN UP FOR ALCTS' 40TH ANNIVERSARY GALA CELEBRATION ALCTS celebrates its ruby anniversary this year with a celebration on June 27 at the Ansel Adams Center for Photography in San Francisco (see AN2 v9_no8). Information and registration are available on the ALCTS home page (www.ala.org/alcts.html). Of course, you may also sign up by contacting the ALCTS office by e-mail to alcts@ala.org or by phone 800-545-2433 ext. 5032 or ext. 5035. ************ NEWSLETTER CALL FOR REPORTERS In a few days you should be receiving the preconference issue of the ALCTS newsletter. This issue contains a call to the membership at large to volunteer as reporters for ALCTS programs at the annual conference in San Francisco. I'd like especially at this time to extend that invitation to the committees or units who are actually sponsoring the programs. If you belong to one of these committees or units and would like to have the chance to write the report yourself (or assign someone on the committee to do it), please let me know as soon as possible so that I do not assign your program to someone else. Here are the guidelines for reports: "Programs" include preconferences and regular conference programs, but not discussion group meetings. (DG meetings will be covered by the regular report forms that the chairs submit to the ALCTS Office.) Suggested length is 300 words for preconferences, 200 words for programs. I realize this is not very much, but page limitations for the newsletter make it necessary to keep the reports brief. Reports should be e-mailed to me by July 24. Thanks for your support. These reports are greatly appreciated and I'm sure very valuable to the membership. --Dale Swensen Editor, ALCTS Newsletter dale_swensen@byu.edu ************ CONFERENCE ON PERMANENT PAPER The Library for Foreign Literature in Moscow has organized a one-day conference on the promotion of permanent paper in Russia to be held on October 30, 1997. The conference is part of the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Library for Foreign Literature, which selected the topic due to its crucial importance for preservation of world and national heritage. The conference highlights include use of permanent paper as a long-term preservation strategy, standards, justification of the investment into the production of permanent paper, evaluation of awareness of permanent paper and its use in Russia, and exploration of European and global cooperation in promoting permanent paper. There is no charge for registration, but space must be reserved by August 1. Participants are responsible for the arrangments and payment of their own travel and accommodation.
