Piercy Award. The award, $1,500 and a citation donated by Yankee Book Peddler, Inc., is given to a librarian with fewer than 10 years' experience for contributions and leadership in the field of library collections and technical services. MacLennan is being recognized "for her leadership in providing a forum for communication and discourse among the members of the serials information chain through SERIALST, a highly acclaimed online international discussion list; and for her dedication to her profession by serving two terms on the NASIG executive board and creating an electronic communication link among its members," said Deana L. Astle, chair of the Esther J. Piercy Award Jury. She is the author of numerous publications and book and periodical reviews. MacLennan has a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a master's degree from Simmons College in Boston, Mass. The award will be presented on June 30, at 9:30 a.m. at the ALCTS Membership Meeting and President's Program during the ALA Annual Conference, June 26-July 3, in San Francisco. ************ STRAUCH TO RECEIVE ALCTS LEADERSHIP IN LIBRARY ACQUISITIONS AWARD Katina P. Strauch, head, collection development, College of Charleston Libraries, South Carolina, has been named the recipient of the Leadership In Library Acquisitions award presented by the ALCTS Acquisitions Section. The award, $1,500 and a citation donated by Harrassowitz, recognizes significant contributions by and outstanding leadership of an individual in the field of acquisition librarianship. "Strauch is being recognized "for organizing significant forums -- the Charleston Conference and 'Against the Grain' -- for discussion and exchange of ideas among, initially, acquisitions librarians, and now, the full spectrum of parties involved in information and scholarly communication," said Ron L. Ray, chair of the Leadership in Library Acquisitions Award Committee. "Numerous people contribute to these forums, but everyone involved knows they wouldn't exist without Katina's energy and charm." She received her MLS in 1972 from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. In 1992 she received the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill SLIS Distinguished Alumna Award, and was the 1996 South Carolina Outstanding Librarian of the Year. The award will be presented on June 30, at 9:30 a.m. at the ALCTS Membership Meeting and President's Program during the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco. ************ BOWKER/ULRICH'S SERIALS LIBRARIANSHIP AWARD HONORS HEPFER Cynthia K. Hepfer, head, serials and bindery department, Health Sciences Library, State University of New York at Buffalo, is the 1997 recipient of the Bowker/Ulrich's Serials Librarianship Award presented by the ALCTS Serials Section. The award, $1,500 and a citation donated by Bowker/Ulrich's, is presented for distinguished contributions to serials librarianship through participation in professional associations and/or library education programs, contributions to the body of serials literature, research in the area of serials, or development of tools or methods to enhance access to or management of serials. Hepfer is being recognized for her "distinguished leadership in the ALCTS Serials Section and in the North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) where she has shaped both the administrative and programmatic direction of those organizations," said Norma Fair, chair of the award committee. "Under Cindy's editorship, Serials Review became a peer-reviewed journal and is now recognized as one of the pre-eminent journals in the field of serials. As a member of the SISAC [Serials Industry Systems Advisory Committee] Executive Committee and editor of SISAC News, Cindy has contributed to expanding the knowledge and understanding of standards related to the serials industry, and she is recognized as a valued contributor to CONSER through her participation in a project for non-CONSER institutions." She received the MLS from the University of Pittsburgh in 1977. She received the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship, 1994-1995. The award will be presented on June 30, at 9:30 a.m. at the ALCTS Membership Meeting and President's Program during the ALA Annual Conference, June 26-July 3, in San Francisco. ************ NORTH AMERICAN TITLE COUNT INFORMATION AND CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS The North American Title Count (NATC), last done in 1993, is scheduled to be taken in the Summer of 1997, with publication planned for distribution early in 1998. The Title Count is sponsored by the ALCTS Collection Management and Development Section, Quantitative Measures for Collection Management Committee, Subcommittee on the North American Title Count. Former participants and other interested libraries are invited to join the project by filling out a "Statement of Intent to Participate" and returning it by April 30, 1997. If your library does not receive the "Statement of Intent..." early in April, the form, which can be copied, will be found on the Web at http://www.libs.uga.edu/natc/natc97.htm. Note that there will be no paper product in 1997, other than accompanying introductory material and some suggestions for use. Instead, the data will be supplied on disk, in an ASCII comma delimited file. This type of file can be easily imported into several standard spreadsheets, and will enable the users of the Count to easily manipulate the data and customize it for their own library's needs. It will also be possible to read the file with a viewer such as Adobe Acrobat. In the material accompanying the disk there will be examples of the kinds of spreadsheets that might be used and instructions for using the data with those packages. The cost to participate in the 1997 Count is based on an estimated 65 members. The cost-per-individual institution will be $600, and will include one copy of the final product. ALCTS will bill participating libraries in September 1997. Non-participating libraries will be able to purchase a copy of the Count; the price will be set by ALCTS at a later date. The Library Research Center (LRC) at the University of Illinois will mail the data collection packages, including detailed instructions, early in May 1997, to libraries returning the Intent to Participate form. The LRC will collect and process the data and provide the final report for 1997, as it has done for previous counts. Data collection may be accomplished either by manual or machine count, or by a combination of both methods. Institutions producing a count from an automated system should be able to submit that system's report online rather than having to transfer the information to worksheets. A Web interface will also be available for reporting data. The count should be taken between June 1 and July 30. The intent is to produce, insofar as is possible, a count reflecting titles held on July 1. The call number range list for 1997 includes 14 changes or expansions from the 1993 LC call number range list and 2 new ranges. Libraries needing to do pre-programming, or to compare the list with the one they used in 1993, should send an e-mail message to natc97@alexia.lis.uiuc.edu, or call Diane LaBarbera at LRC at (217) 333-1980 to obtain the new list of call number ranges. A Dewey/LC equivalency table, based upon the 19th edition of Dewey, was made available to Dewey libraries for the 1993 Count. That table will be made available again to libraries that request it in order to participate in the 1997 Count. It does not reflect any changes corresponding to call number ranges changed in 1993, or those changed in 1997. With those caveats, the table can be obtained from the ALCTS Office by calling Beatrice Calvin at 800-545-2433, ext. 5036, or e-mailing her at bcalvin@ala.org. The first National Shelflist Count was taken in 1973 with 17 participants. In 1993, as the North American Title Count, data was collected from 56 libraries, including all four national libraries. The Count has come to be accepted as an important, standard tool for collection analysis.
