What are the technical services functions that can be purchased? Are there guidelines for selecting a vendor? How does the increased prevalence of outsourcing, of all kinds, affect how you do your job? "The developments in outsourcing for collections and technical services are of critical importance to ALCTS members. Our roles in selection, acquisition, cataloging and contract services are undergoing significant change," says ALCTS President Carol Chamberlain. "ALCTS continues to address these issues through conferences, programs and, publications, and we are again providing two opportunities for fruitful discussion and thoughtful exchange at meetings of our Technical Services in Public Libraries Discussion Group and ALCTS Publisher/Vendor Library Relations Committee." Both meetings will be held during the upcoming ALA Midwinter Meeting, in Washington, D.C., February 14-18, 1997. On Saturday, February 15, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Room 5 of the Renaissance Washington Hotel, the Technical Services in Public Libraries Discussion Group is holding a panel discussion on "Outsourcing Technical Services: The Selection Process." Moderated by Joe Raker, Coordinator of Technical Services, Boston Public Library, the panel will include: Karen A. Wilson, Head Technical Services Librarian/Assistant Director, J. Hugh Jackson Library, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University; Barbara Winters, Director of Central Services, University Libraries, Wright State University; Gary Shirk, Chief Information Officer, Yankee Book Peddler; Rebecca James, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Ingram Library Services; and Asha Capoor, Group Director, Library Services and Database Administration, Baker & Taylor. On Monday, February 17, from 9:30-11 a.m. in Rooms 12-13 of the Renaissance Washington Hotel the ALCTS Publisher/Vendor Library Relations Committee (PVLR) will hold an open forum on "Changing relationships among publishers, vendors and librarians in an age of outsourcing: whose job is it anyway?" This will also be a panel discussion among book vendors and subscription agents, book reviewers, and publishers, moderated by Trisha Davis, Chair of PVLR, and Head, Continuation Acquisition Division, The Ohio State University Libraries. There will be short presentations on outsourcing initiatives, pilot projects, and ongoing programs to provide background to the services vendors are offering and what the market wants and why. The discussion will look at who the market is, who wants what, and as outsourcing covers more of the "traditional" librarian roles, how that affects other members of the supply/demand chain. Confirmed participants include Stan Terry, Ebsco; Bill Ott, Editor, Booklist; Sandy Gurshman, Readmore; John Secor, Yankee Book Peddler; Larry Price, Ingram Library Services; and Barry Fast, Academic Book Center. ************ CRG MEETINGS AT MIDWINTER The Council of Regional Groups will be meeting in Washington as follows: CRG Business Meeting Sunday, February 16, 2:00-4:00 in the Renaissance Washington Hotel, GrandBallroom C.
