Ford, president-elect of ALA, is seeking interested persons to assist her in carrying out the program of her presidency. The theme of her program is Libraries: Local Touch - Global Reach. Below is her program proposal, followed by her invitation to work with her on the program. 1997-98 ALA PRESIDENTIAL PROGRAM PROPOSAL OF BARBARA J. FORD LOCAL TOUCH: Library Enhancement for Local Community ALA Volunteer Activities - ALA members and vendors attending conference collaborate on volunteer opportunities at Midwinter (New Orleans) and Annual (Washington, D.C.) Conferences - Make-over of school libraries or public library branches or sections. Activities might include painting walls, repairing books, wiring libraries, installing computers or software, teaching how to use software, reading to children or elderly, introducing adults or children to electronic resources, etc. - ALA chapters, library schools, etc., can organize and identify appropriate sites, solidify details, form steering committee - Involve other organizations where appropriate Other Volunteer Activities - Encourage chapters to have similar events at their conferences - Develop tip sheet for how to organize volunteer events - Publicize local touch of ALA through these events Connect Library to the Community - Communication, engagement, action, outreach, advocacy - Promote libraries through public message arousing curiosity and stimulating the imagination - Use technology to involve new members and the public, to hear new voices, to become more diverse - Focus on customer needs and customer service - Possible mini-legislative day at ALA Annual Conference GLOBAL REACH: Programs and Activities Focusing on Global Issues International keynote speakers at Midwinter and Annual Conferences Literacy Fair at Annual Conference - Focus on information literacy, electronic technologies, as well as others - Invite international presenters - Invite embassies to send presenters - Involve USIA - Send letters to recent international participants - Involve international electronic vendors and book sellers - Invite international visitors and U.S. librarians to bring children's books to share and trade - Involve Library of Congress Center for the Book, Library Fellows, Fulbright, Peace Corps, library associations in other countries, other U.S. library associations as well as international librarians. Education on diversity, advocacy, leadership development, global resources and issues - Continue advocacy at global level - Focus on libraries providing infrastructure to support global community - Conduct educational programs and small group discussions Publications and resources on global issues - Develop information and guidelines on how to focus on global issues (10 things to do, benefits of global focus, tip sheet) - Hold contest to identify best international library literacy practices - Encourage librarians to work with sister cities and other international programs Here is how you can get involved: If you would like to serve on Barbara's presidential program planning advisory committee, subscribe to the PRES-ADV listserv by sending the following message to listproc@ala.org: subscribe pres-adv . You will find the report on the ALA web site at http://www.ala.org/alaorg/srtf/srtf_297_report.html or, from the the ALA home page, go to the section titled "The Organization," click on "Structure Revision Task Force," then click on "Report of the Structure Revision Task Force, February 1997". In addition to the report, you will find discussion and recommendations for Council terms and the structure/composition of Council. ************ INTERNET ACCESS FOR MEMBERS AT WASHINGTON CONVENTION CENTER There will be two distinct areas set aside for Internet access at the Washington Convention Center for those attending the Midwinter Meeting: The Internet Cafe will be located in the atrium lobby of the WCC, and will be open 24 hours per day. It will have 15 PCs arranged in three groups of five tables. It is meant as a casual, drop-in place, and will be located near the concession stands. The Internet Room will be located in the Exhibit Hall near booths 617 and 618. It will have 17 PCs, 15 stand-up stations and two stations intended for wheelchair access. The Internet Room will be open during Exhibit Hall hours, Saturday 9 - 5, Sunday 9 - 5, and Monday 9 - 4. There are also two Internet-ready meeting rooms available if your group would like to do demonstrations, etc. Contact Conference Services for room availability (800-545-2433 ext. 3225). Both "open" locations will be self-serve, first-come first-serve. Software for all machines is still being discussed, but all machines will have at least a web browser (probably Netscape) capable of http, ftp, gopher, and telnet access.
