All interested publishers, librarians, and vendors attending the ALA Midwinter Meeting are invited and encouraged to come to both meetings of the ALCTS/AAP Joint Committee and help design a new survey. Carried out about every 10 years, the ALCTS/AAP Library Marketing Survey provides librarians, publishers, and vendors with a better understanding of the market as a whole and clearer insight into each others' needs. The survey was first conducted in 1975 and again in 1986. The new survey will reflect changes in the past decade and the effect of new technologies on the way we do business. The ALCTS/AAP Joint Committee will meet on Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center, Rm. 22. The Committee will be joined by the Cataloging in Publication (CIP) Advisory Board. (A demonstration of CIP's electronic projects and discussion of CIP compliance procedures are planned.) A second Joint Committee meeting, to initiate planning for the marketing survey, will be held on Monday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Westin City Center (formerly the Washington Vista Hotel) in the Monticello West Room. ************ DISCUSSION GROUP TOPICS FOR MIDWINTER Following are discussion group meetings not previously announced in AN2. We will continue to publicize your discussion group topics until the final pre-conference issue of AN2, the week of February 3. ACQUISITIONS LIBRARIANS/VENDORS OF LIBRARY MATERIALS Sunday, February 16, 8:30-10:30 a.m., Washington Vista-BR C Topic: Virtual Acquisitions: Blessing or Burden - Acquiring library materials in electronic formats. Part I: The Issues. Libraries, vendors and publishers are facing major changes and additional responsibilities and challenges with the advent of electronic publishing. Representatives from a vendor and a publisher will kick off the meeting by identifying a number of issues faced by those organizations when dealing with the provision of materials in electronic formats. Then we will form small discussion groups to identify the many issues being faced by acquisitions/serials librarians and their staff when dealing with these materials in addition to their regular workloads. We'll also be thinking about how vendors, publishers and libraries can all be of help to each other. At the end of the meeting, we'll come together to compile our lists of issues. (Stay tuned to ALA Annual, when we'll try to come up with some solutions as well...)
