Office staff, with support from the Leadership Committee (chaired by Miriam Palm), will take you through the policies and procedures which you will want to know about as you begin your tenure. The orientation will be held on Sunday, July 7, 9:30-11:00 a.m., in the Oak Room of the Doral Hotel. ************ LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE PLANS BREAKFAST The ALCTS Leadership Committee is hosting a breakfast, open to the membership, on Saturday, July 6, 7:30-9:00 a.m., in the Terrace Penthouse Main of the St. Moritz Hotel. In this informal setting, two experienced ALCTS committee members will speak on "Making Your Way to the Top: Ten Leadership Tips." There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and answers about moving into and through the ALCTS committee structure. ************ DISCUSSION GROUP TOPICS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED NOW FOR COGNOTES, ALCTS FLYER June 7 is the deadline for your discussion group topics to make it into _Cognotes_, the ALA Annual Conference on-site newspaper. It is also the date by which the ALCTS office needs to receive them for inclusion on the discussion group flyer which is available at the conference. Send your material for _Cognotes_ to Pier London, ALA Conference Services, by e-mail to plondon@ala.org and to Yvonne McLean in the ALCTS office to ymclean@ala.org. If you would like your topics included in a pre-conference issue of _AN2_, send your copy (electronically only) to kwhittlesey@ala.org by June 17. These late topics will not be included in _Cognotes_ or on the flyer, but we will be glad to include them in _AN2_ as space permits. ************ PRE-ORDER/PRE-CATALOG SEARCH GROUP TO DISCUSS LICENSING AND ACCESS On Monday, July 8, 2:00-4:00 in the Javits Convention Center 1A12, the ALCTS Pre-Order/Pre-Catalog Search Discussion Group will present "The [Virtual] Reality of Video/CD-ROM Licensing & Access." This is a brief discussion of viewing rights and licensing agreements from a library perspective and the vendor's viewpoint. Issues such as copyright will be addressed. Presenting are Barbara Albee, Head of Acquisitions, IUPUI University Library; Patty Pfaff, Director of Library Markets, Baker & Taylor Entertainment Division; Mahnaz Moshfegh, Head of Acquisitions & Serials, Indiana University School of Law; and Ida Zigelbaum, Senior Manager, Marketing Dept. Library Division, Information Access The moderator is Liana Zhou, Head of Technical Services, Kinsey Institute. The discussion group is chaired by Mahnaz K. Moshfegh, moshfeg@indiana.edu; vice-chair is Barbara Albee, balbee@library.iupui.edu. ************ ALCTS PRECONFERENCE REGISTRATIONS ACCEPTED UNTIL JUNE 21 ALCTS will continue to accept registrations for its three preconferences until June 21, or until filled. The preconferences, all scheduled for July 5, are SGML: I Know I've Heard of It, to be held at Baruch College; In or Out--In-House Innovation and Outsourcing: Technical Services Alternatives for the 90's, to be held at the Sheraton New York; and DDC 21: Dewey for the 21st Century, to be held at the Plaza Hotel. Look for brochures at the Annual Conference. The goal of Open Stacks is to create a lively and timely presence on the Web and to build a community of readers, authors, and prospective authors of library literature. On the web site you will find information such as proposal guidelines, FAQs on the publishing process, just-published books, key projects in progress, and some "just for fun" stuff, too.
