The workshops will provide the information needed to design, implement, and maintain an effective basic preservation program for documents, books, photographs, and other paper-based materials. The first workshop is from October 9-11, 1996 and covers core concepts in preservation; the second is December 5-6, 1996 on emergency preparedness; the third is March 26-28, 1997 on collections maintenance; the fourth is June 12-13, 1997 on selection for preservation; and the final workshop is September 25-26, 1997 and will cover preservation administration. The program emphasizes decision-making and application of information to the participant's institution. Workshops will be based on a combination of lectures, discussion, and small group exercises; each will include a "hands-on" component. The program is designed for the full-time professional with part-time preservation responsibilities. At the completion of the series, each institution can expect to have a basic preservation plan, with concrete, realistic goals for future action. Participation will be limited to twenty participants selected o the basis of an application provided by NEDCC. The application deadline is September 4, 1996. The cost of the series is $450. Applications will be available in June 1996. For additional information or to request an application contact Steve Dalton, Northeast Document Conservation Center, 100 Brickstone Square, Andover, MA 01810; Phone 508/470-1010; Fax 508/475-6021; email nedcc@world.std.com. ***** ARL STATISTICS REPORT INCREASED DEMAND FOR LIBRARY SERVICES _ARL Statistics_, 1994-95 is now available. This annual publication reports research library trends in collections, expenditures, and staffing levels. For the first time, an array of service measures such as circulation, reference, library instruction, and interlibrary loan are reported. The publication also continues to update the trends of serial and monograph costs in research libraries. Reported findings suggest that libraries are dramatically increasing their service activities without a corresponding increase in staffing. The cost is $65 ($35 for ARL members), 118 pages pbk, ISSN 0147-2135, 1996. For more information contact Martha Kyrillidou at martha@cni.org. The data are also available on the Internet: url:http://arl.cni.org/stats/Statistics/stat.html, url:gopher://arl.cni.org:70/11/stat, and url:ftp://arl.cni.org/stats. ***** GUIDE TO CD CARE ON KODAK WEB SITE A guide to CD care is available on the Kodak web site. The guide talks about both long-term aging and catastrophic failure. Contents of "Permanence, Care, and Handling of CDs" include discussions of how long CD's can last, safe handling, and storage conditions, as well as CD permanence in perspective. It can be found on the Web site http://www.Kodak.com/daiHome/techInfo/permanence.shtml. The document can aso be obtained by beginning with the Commission on Preservation and Access' Web page and then linking to CoOL's Electronic Media Page. ***** NISO HAS GUIDELINES FOR STORAGE OF PAPER RECORDS A new technical report that will help libraries and archives store paper-based records in a way that ensures their preservation is now available from NISO. Environmental Guidelines for the Storage of Paper Records (NISO TR-01-1995) provides guidance to librarians, archivists, engineers, architects, and others involved in the design, construction, renovation, and maintenance of buildings where paper-ased records are stored. The report suggests minimum and/or maximum values for temperature, relative humidity, exposure to light, and the removal of gaseous and particulate contaminants. It is designed so that users may select specific limits for a particular storage condition or repository. It also addresses the storage of animal skins (leather, parchment, and vellum) and photographic materials which are typically stored in the same space as paper-based records. Environmental Guidelines for the Storage of Paper Records (NISO TR-01-1995) is available from NISO Press, Bethesda, MD, for $35. Copyright 1995, 40pp, ISBN: 1-880124-21-1.
