This six-year, $150 million per year renewal and updating of the Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) was passed as part of H.R. 1720, the Careers "Lite" bill. The bill also included one-year extensions of the National Literacy Act, several vocational and adult education programs, and privatization of two higher education related fund organizations. The bill was the first item brought to the floor today under the "suspension" calendar for noncontroversial measures requiring a two-thirds vote. The vote on H.R. 1720 was a strong voice vote; no dissenting voices were heard. Therefore, every library advocate can thank his or her own Representative for support of LSTA in H.R. 1720. Thanks to all of you who contacted House members about this bill. Your efforts were extremely helpful. H.R. 1720 now goes to the Senate where action must also be taken. The exact Senate scenario is still being worked out. We'll have more information on the next steps shortly. _________________________________________________________________ ALAWON is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
