REED HUNDT LIBRARY SUPPORTERS IN WASHINGTON, D.C. AREA ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND SEPT. 19 EVENT AT D.C.P.L. FCC Chairman Reed Hundt will receive "Equity on the Information Superhighway" petitions with over 21,000 signatures from Dr. Betty Turock, immediate past-president of the American Library Association. Turock will present the petitions on Thursday, September 19, at 3pm at the Martin Luther Memorial Library at 901 G St., NW, Washington, D.C. ALA and other education groups have endorsed an "Equity Rate" for libraries and schools which would provide a full range of telecommunications services at less than commercial rates. The Equity Petition, signed by people of all ages from Alabama to Wyoming, was launched last year as part of ALA's campaign led by Turock to ensure equity on the information superhighway. Turock said she believes the response indicates strong support for the Equity Rate as a way to promote connectivity and public access to electronic information. This presentation follows a similar event held in Florida where ALA President Mary Somerville and a delegation of Florida librarians, held a similar event at the Florida State Library in Tallahassee on September 17. They presented petitions to Florida Public Utility Commissioner Julia Johnson, who is also a member of the FCC-Joint Board which will be making recommendations on the library equity rate and other universal service policies to the full FCC. ACTION: Library supporters in the Washington, D.C. area are encouraged to attend the event which will be held in the lobby of the King Library.
