Appropriations for the National Endowment for the Arts held at the subcommittee level of $99 million, while the appropriations for the National Endowment for the Humanities was cut from $150 million to $99 million. Amendments to increase the proportion of grants given to state programs failed. The FY96 Interior Appropriations bill will be voted on by the full House sometime after the July 4 recess. ACTION NEEDED: Library supporters should continue to contact House members asking for a favorable vote for the Interior Appropriations Bill. After the bill passes the House it will be considered by the Senate Subcommittee on Interior of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Members of that subcommittee are: Senators Slade Gorton (R-WA), chair, Ted Stevens (R-AK), Thad Cochran (R-MS), Pete Domenici (R-NM), Mark Hatfield (R-OR), Conrad Burns (R-MT), Robert Bennett (R-UT), Connie Mack (R-FL), Robert Byrd (D- WV), Bennett Johnston (D-LA), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Dale Bumpers (D-AR), Ernest Hollings (D-SC), Harry Reid (D-NV), Patty Murray (D-WA). It is important that the NEA, the NEH, and the Institute for Museum Services funding levels are increased from the House funding levels. *************************************************************************** S. 856 MARKUP CANCELLED The markup scheduled for S.856, the Senate reauthorization of the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, (which incorporates the ALA Library Services and Technology proposal), has been cancelled.
