This may be a little off topic but....our organization is in the process of designing a new Performance Appraisal system and I would like to draw upon the collective wisdom of the wider community. Has anyone out there gone through this recently? Are there pitfalls to be avoided? Directions in which I might be pointed? Information available? This system will apply to all employees of our public library, so comments need not be limited to technical services staff. Any insight, comments or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to respond to me directly, and I will forward your comments on to my colleague. The demonstration was pretty good, although the demonstrators did get the roll of tattle-tapes jammed in the machine a couple times. It looks especially useful for retrospective work, but we would be using it mostly for taping current periodicals. I have been asked to try to collect feedback from sites where this machine is in use, so I have come to AcqNet. Please feel free to e-mail me directly at lbspodic@ust.hk Thanks. Blevins (Univ. of N. Carolina-Greensboro) Subject: Collection Development Policies My name is Christy Blevins, and I am a student in the UNC-Greensboro LIS program, and an associate at the Greensboro Public Library. One of the projects I am working on (for both the library and my public libraries class) is a collection development study for the Greensboro Public Library. We are considering revising our collection development policy, and I would like to know what factors other libraries consider in their policies. This would include traditional standards followed as well as issues specific to your libraries and any new trends that have cropped up. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Please respond to me personally, and I will be glad to share my findings with anyone who is interested. Thanks! Two years ago I was aggressively hit up by one of their telemarketers and let them send me the AT&T business directory. My acquisitions assistant was on vacation; the way the salesperson spoke I thought this was something we ordered from them on a regular basis; the salesperson was very pushy and I said OK. When the book arrived it cost over $175 and was the same AT&T Bus. Dir. we were receiving from Regent Book for $25! I then went through a very long and very frustrating process to return the book and get the invoice canceled. I realized I had accepted the order, but sincerely felt they had duped me. Even more frustrating was the fact that other salespeople were continuing to call our library to try & sell us the same title. We only have 6 librarians! I was so angry at the end that I wrote to the CT Better Business Bureau. At this time ibd was in or near New Haven, CT. Well, they have struck again. This time someone in our college Telecommunications Dept. fell for the line that the library always orders this - just say OK. The person was new to the college, too busy, and said OK. ibd has now moved to Miami according to the invoice we received (for $184). Anyone else with similar experiences? Thank you. We have been disappointed with the service we've received from our current vendor and would appreciate having other options. Thank you. Carolyn Bennett Acquisitions Gen. Libs. We at HBPL just started using Baker & Taylor's Libris 2020 ordering system. We are having trouble with the MARC.OUT feature to display books on order on our online catalog (GEAC). It seems that several records are recording a BAN of BTK99999999, which means that if several titles have this number, they overlay each other so that only the last title with this number displays on order. The others are overwritten and do not display. We are using BAN because we don't want additional copies of a title (i.e., more of the latest Sue Grafton) to overlay an existing MARC record with a record that states "on order." I assume BTK9999999 is bogus; is there any work-around? -- Julie Bixby http://www.bixby.org/julie/ (8)--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 17:10:51 -0400 From: Michele Crump (Univ. of Florida) Subject: Bookstores in academic libraries Does your academic library have a bookstore? If so, we'd appreciate hearing from you... Recently, the University of Florida Smathers Library opened a bookstore to sell its unselected gift materials. We are soliciting information via a short survey on how other academic libraries are managing their bookstores. Please contact Steven Carrico at stecarr@mail.uflib.ufl.edu with questions, information, or to request a survey.
