[I am aware of NTIS, DTIC, NCSTRL and CoRR for computer science, the NASA and associated sites, and listings from Yahoo / GoTo / Lycos / Snap / Google / Excite searches for 'Technical Reports'] An example of a professional society technical reports Web site is that of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) found at the following address http://www.sme.org/cgi-bin/storefront/search/T///SME/ If such a registry does *not* exist, I am prepared to compile one over the course of our Fall semester as part of my formal duties as an engineering specialist here at Iowa State. [For such a project I'd begin by systematically reviewing the Web sites listed in the _Scholarly Societies Project_ compendium at http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/society/overview.html . You've got to be very careful with them, because unless you state very clearly that they should not send you the book they're talking about, it's going to end up on your doorstep. I haven't had anyone get rude with me, but I have to admit that I've gotten a bit curt with them at times. ;-) Rick Anderson Head Acquisitions Librarian Jackson Library UNC Greensboro 1000 Spring Garden St. Greensboro, NC 27402-6175 PH (336) 334-5281 FX (336) 334-5399 http://www.uncg.edu/~r_anders +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Thu, 2 Sep 1999 15:24:16 -0400 From: Keith R. Stetson (Fairfield Univ) Subject: Grey House Publishers I and our head of reference have gotten a barrage of calls from Grey House, which it pains me to say is located about 30 miles from here! They have been hawking various titles to us, and are trying the "let us send you a copy on approval" technique. They claim to have taken over some Gale titles, but I don't believe that Gale would give up the rights to any viable product! After requesting that the last sales representative who called inform his superiors that we do not want to receive marketing calls and do not accept titles on approval, and instructing the library secretary to tell any future callers that I will not accept their phone calls, the calls seem to have stopped. I continue to find it hard to believe that some publishers believe that these techniques are effective, but they must work often enough for them to continue the practice. Keith R. While it is comforting to know that this is apparently an epidemic, I can only marvel that books and house siding and cemetery plots are sold in much the same way!! Any library which receives an unsolicited book has the right to keep it as a gift, but I, personally, get tired of having my time wasted by folks who try to force their wares on us (the company in question has phoned almost every librarian in our building trying to hawk their wares). Besides wasting productivity (on our part), this is an incredible annoyance! Dr. Peter V. Picerno Collection Development Team Leader Dean B. Video Vendors Does anyone have suggestions for acquiring videocassettes which are no longer available from the original production company, i.e. that are "out of print?" I have been trying to find a vendor from which to purchase a video produced by Granda Television in 1994 which they no longer have in their catalog. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you. Such ordering is not centralized, and we think that, combining the expertise of the State Library and the Purchasing Division, we can save state employees time, and the state money. Our idea at this point is that, based on a list of requirements and preferred features from the State Library, Purchasing would issue an RFP to web bookstores. We think that some corporate libraries have probably done something similar, and wonder if some academic libraries may have worked on a similar campus-wide system. I'd like to hear from any library of any type which has done such a system. We're particularly interested in your contract with the web bookstore, how well the system worked, how much it's used, any problems that cropped up, etc. -- Jey Wann Acquisitions Coordinator Oregon State Library State Library Bldg. Since some book vendors supply CD-ROMs and some do not, I needed to identify a vendor who definitely had no problem obtaining them. And I got only one response -- from Michael Cooper, who heads BUSCA, Inc. (formerly Input Culture). While we don't order many CD-ROMs, we do order whatever we need from them. They succeed in getting them for us, because they are willing to do whatever digging is required to locate them. Impressive! The full address is: BUSCA, Inc. P.O.
