I never saw Melody's 2nd message which was different from the first one. I will post a new message from Melody if she wants to send it again.] Eleanor - The message from me that was posted in ACQNET 9:7 is a message that had already run in ACQNET 9:5. I had actually sent another message seeking to clarify the original, because I kept receiving suggestions that I get help from a vendor in coming up with a "first day" collection, which is not an option for me because of insufficient funding for 10,000 new books. My second message never appeared, and I assumed it fell through the cracks, as I sent it right around the time you were leaving. I'm afraid I'm about to be inundated with a new raft of the same sort of suggestions (have already received two). Is there anything to be done? Would such a clarifying message qualify for ACQflash status? Thanks. * * * * * * * * * Melody Norman-Camp, Librarian South Louisiana Community College 908 Ember Drive New Iberia, LA 70560 (318) 373-0164 (318) 373-0166 (fax) (2)--------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1999 09:01:08 -0500 From: Mary Throumoulos (St. John Fisher College) Subject: B&T Title Source I am interested in finding out if anyone has negotiated a contract with Baker & Taylor for Title Source II recently. Our library is considering this product and it would be helpful to know if cost can be negotiated or are if they are sticking by their established price. Thanks! A main concern is the interfacing capability of DRA with our new accounting system, People Soft. We want to eliminate as much duplicate data entry as possible. I am looking for experiences and suggestions from libraries who have had similar experiences (regardless of vendors) and how each has worked with institutional accounting departments and/or systems personnel. I'm especially interested in the following: *Were you able to interface both systems? What problems, if any, did you encounter? *If duplicate entry was required, what problems did you face and what solutions were developed? *What institutional restrictions did you encounter? *How was internal/external work flow affected? *How was electronic ordering affected? Thanks! In the current building, all print periodicals (current, bound and microform) are located on the main floor, near the reference desk and microform reader-printers. There is no service point in the periodicals area, but reference librarians and the paraprofessionals from the shelving department assist students in finding issues and using the reader/printers. Plans for the new library call for: A) Putting all bound periodicals in compact shelving (capacity for 115,000 vols.) B) Reading area near the current periodicals (2200 subscriptions), and C) Area for 70 microform cabinets and 10 reader-printers. (We're assuming microform is least attractive physically, requires staff assistance and service, and is likely to grow at the slowest rate over the next 20 years). In short, we're concerned about creating 2 or even 3 separate locations for periodicals on a floor the size of a football field. If you've recently been involved in designing or redesigning a periodicals area, we'd love to hear what you've done. In how many places does your library are store journals? How well has it worked? What do you wish you could do differently? What reactions do you get from users? Who has primary responsibility for helping patrons physically locate and use the periodicals? We sell Chinese books through the Internet. We intend to venture into the "traditional" areas of supplying Chinese books (published in Hong Kong, Taiwan and the People's Republic of China) to all our global customers, especially those in North America and Europe by giving them a service like they have never experienced before. However, we need to know the budget size your institutions have for acquiring Chinese books annually. If these figures are too sensitive, you can reply to me directly using one of my e-mail addresses. Thank you for helping us to take the first step. However, our concern is that it is too much of our budget, that is, it is equivalent to our three years budget. However, we have decided to buy back issues from the last year, 1997-98. Can someone help us find solution to this problem? We are planning to "buy" a second hand subscription of PsycLIT 1997-98. We would really, really appreciate if someone can donate for us copies of the previous years' issues. Thank you and we hope to hear from you. Sincerely yours, Benjie M.
