Subject: Video Purchases [Ed. note: I have also suggested she post on VIDEOLIB] I am fairly new to purchasing videos. Would someone advise me on whether we need to purchase public viewing rights for videos we buy to be placed in our library's circulating collection? We also have titles we place on reserve that are loaned to faculty to show in their classes. What rights do we need here? I thought I was clear on this but every time I want to purchase a PBS title I get a different story. Hirsch Subject: RE: Returns (ACQNET 8:34) Are you on some kind of contract where you cannot return items to the vendor? I have a policy that if the item to be returned costs less than $40.00, I either add the item to the collection or give it to our Friends of the Library for their book sale, but if the cost is more than $40.00, I return it to the vendor. Ingram and Baker & Taylor have "no hassle" return systems which make this pretty easy. Most of our reference sources also accept returns if they are timely. Of course, the items must still be unmarked and re-saleable, or damaged before we got them. I do run into the problem of discovering the duplicate after a volunteer has already applied the bar code. Dear Colleagues: What do **you** do with occasional unwanted duplicate purchases?? They appear to be the kind of niggling problem which is minor (in terms of frequency) and potentially major (in terms of dollar costs). I am looking for a fairly reliable method for distributing the funds for these programs next fiscal year (June 1, 1999). Currently, 7 factors (enrollment, course sections, majors, faculty, credit hours, usage and cost) are used in our undergraduate allocation formula, but with no weighting. Any assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Please reply to me and if there is enough interest, I will summarize for the list. Thank you! Carolina at Chapel Hill) Subject: Retirement of Helen R. Miller from UNC-CH Helen R. Miller, Head of the Order Section in the Academic Affairs Library at the University of North Carolina for the past twenty-six years, will retire at the end of January 1999. Her colleagues at UNC-CH will miss her enthusiasm and zeal for the purchase of library materials (formerly known as books). During her tenure here, the Library has grown from less than 2 million to almost 5 million volumes. The majority of those titles were ordered and received by Helen's section. As is often the case in acquisitions work, the flow of orders has never been smooth during all of these years. As a result, Helen and her section have often shown exceptional dedication and energy during peak receiving periods to achieve the annual expenditure goals. Not only has Helen enjoyed the purchase of books but she has relished the pursuit of the elusive and difficult-to-obtain titles. She carried that work over into her long tenure with the ALCTS AS Foreign Book Dealers Directories Subcommittee. In that capacity, Helen collaborated with colleagues around the world in the collection of data about foreign vendors. She also served as the Chair of the ALCTS Role of the Professional in Technical Services Discussion Group. In North Carolina, Helen has served as Co-Chair of PLAIN (Piedmont Librarians' Information Network) for the past 15+ years. This group meets informally to discuss acquisitions-related matters and, despite having no membership dues, usually has attendance of 50+ individuals at its meetings! Helen's colleagues here in the Library wish her the best in her retirement years. After allowing her a brief rest, we have asked her back for part-time temporary help this spring to expend a very late, unexpected, and large infusion of money for books! We ask that you join us in this celebration of Helen's contributions to the acquisitions field. If you would like to contact Helen before her official departure, her email is Helen_Miller@unc.edu. Congratulations, thanks, and all best wishes, Helen!!!! ************************************************************************** Janet L.
