We would be happy to receive recommendations from experienced music librarians on publishers of music scores in the U.S. and U.K. and also names of vendors who specialize in supply of music materials. Please reply directly to me. I will be happy to summarize for the list. How to decide My experience in acquisitions has been in a large academic setting, using large traditional vendors. More recently I have worked at setting up a small Aboriginal environment library. We have quite a healthy acquisitions budget and the time has come for me to decide where to take our business. Our local public library has just moved its business to a large bookstore (chain), and people have mentioned using online bookstores to me, while others go straight to the publisher. Can anyone give me the pros and cons of these options, as they have experienced it? Any input would be greatly appreciated! This morning we saw a demo of B&T's Title Source. Has anyone done a close comparison of BIP Plus (which we currently subscribed to) and B&T's Title source? Which product do people prefer to use? ************************************************* Susan Donk, Library Assistant, Acquisitions Drake Memorial Library, SUNY College at Brockport 350 New Campus Drive, Brockport, NY 14420-2995 Phone 716/395-2144 Fax 716/395-5651 Email sdonk@po.brockport.edu ************************************************* (4)---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 11:20:51 -0700 From: Gerry Mckiernan (Univ. of Iowa) Subject: Web Books _WebBooks: Identification, Acquisition, and Management_ Over the past several weeks, months, (and years?), there has/have been general and specific discussions relating to the identification, acquisition, and management of E-Serials (e.g., E-journals, Pay-Per-View/transactional access, cataloging, cost/benefit, etc.). However, to my knowledge there has not been appropriate and analogous discussions that relate to the identification, acquisition, and management of WebBooks. By WebBooks, I mean full-text (plus) monographic works that are accessible over the Web [I _am_ aware of hand-held E-Book developments] I would be interested in beginning a discussion on these other electronic publications, from production, to identification, to selection, to acquisition, to cataloging, to access, to storage, etc. As Always, any and all contributions to the topic are most welcome. Murden Subject: Rock Art Database I am investigating a CD-ROM product called Rock Art Database, produced by Leigh Marymor in Berkeley. To date, I have had a great deal of difficulty getting concrete answers [Excuse the pun! Ed.] from Dr. Marymor, so I am hoping that someone on this list has some actual experience with the product. I am actually investigating this on behalf of a graduate student in art history at my former institution (Virginia Commonwealth University). I was ready to get the product, but needed some answers to a few questions before authorizing the purchase. Rather than go into elaborate detail here, I will ask anyone who has experience with the product to contact me off-list. I will gladly summarize for the list the questions and any answers received. Thanks for any help y'all can give me. The clues he gave to me were: Bernard Baruch is/was an American, his publications have to do with bioethics and the philosophy of the right of ageing. I have checked within our own library and came across two books by Bernard Baruch but they don't seem the correct ones as the titles have nothing to do with medical aspects - instead, they are something to deal with Wall Street economic stuff. I have also checked MEDLINE and only one article was thrown up in the Amer J Phy Med - a biographical article on Bernard Baruch (I am waiting for a photocopy of the article). If you know of other titles by Bernard Baruch relating to bioethics or philosophical aspects of the medical field, can you please let me know so that I could forward the information to my doctor friend? Thank you in advance. Subject: Shelf-ready Standing Orders We are exploring the idea of having our major standing order vendor supply us with material that is shelf-ready. For us this would mean including spine labels, property stamps, and tattle-tapes. We would probably still add our own barcodes since locally we still have to add the item records to our online system and maintain rotation schedules. Most of our standing order materials are in Reference and do not circulate, but even for those that do, we do not use date-due slips anymore. Our standing orders are a fairly orderly bunch of materials and rarely do we have a need to return a volume. My questions include: 1. If you have considered this, have you analyzed the cost of doing the processing in-house versus having the vendor do it? If so, how did you go about this? 2.If you are outsourcing the processing of standing orders, what quality control is the vendor offering and how do you monitor this? 3. If you are doing this, what vendor are you using? I would be happy to summarize for the list. Please send your comments to me directly.
