Tel: 607-273-2418, FAX: 607-273-6003, E-Mail: libros@latinamericanbooks.com They provide excellent service for books from Spain, Mexico, Central and South America. The owners, Linda Russo and Carlos Castenada (husband and wife team) and their staff are competent, cheerful, and helpful. They also have a web site: www.latinamericanbooks.com We have an approval plan with them and couldn't be happier with the quality of the books and service. It is a bit too long to reproduce here, but I would be glad to offer suggestions if someone wants to contact me about individual countries. There are a couple of places to contact in the US that might be able to help: Latin American Book Store 204 N. Recently the elapsed time between order placement by our ten campus libraries and availability of those materials for use has reached as much as seven months. A significant part of this time passes between order placement with vendors and delivery to the district. We use well-established vendors and try to spread our business equally among them. We recognize that, any more, two-year-old imprints are often considered OP. What is the period for which we can normally expect orders for "current" titles to remain outstanding? What could we cite as an acceptable turnaround time between orders and availability? Thanks. Does anyone know why titles from these publishers are so difficult to obtain? In all cases the books are reported as "active" in BIP. It doesn't seem to make a difference which vendor we use and going direct does not (in most cases) solve the problem. I have wondered if reprint publishers hold orders until they have reached a predetermined quota and then print the title. Any thoughts, comments, advice from anyone with the same experience would be appreciated. Please reply to me, not the list. Thank you. Carolyn Bennett Acquisitions Gen. Libs. Both libraries are regarding this as an experiment and monitoring it to test the viability and implications, including the costs, of the concept. I am leading a nine month research study of the two experiments and other examples of outsourced book selection. I would be glad to hear from other public libraries in the US (I have already seen the Hawaii web site) and world wide that have outsourced book selection, or who are considering doing so, and from vendors who offer this service. This seems to be a boom time, and I can't help but wonder if there aren't a number of other Amazon.com-like resources coming on to the Web which I haven't heard of. Do you have a favorite online bookstore, particularly outside the U.S., that you use for verification? And what about for videos? Please drop me a line if you do. The URL for verification tools is: http://www.library.vanderbilt.edu/law/acqs/verif.html and the URL for AcqWeb is: http://www.library.vanderbilt.edu/law/acqs/acqs.html Also, thanks to everyone who keeps me posted about things you have spotted on the Web -- e.g. Mary Margaret Benson, Michaelyn Burnette, Vee Carrington, Eleanor Cook, Lauren Corbett, Barbara Hill, Alice Pidgeon, Colleen Weum, with particular thanks to David Marshall and Cindy Hepfer.
