Subject: Public library info This message is for any public library folks out there. I am looking for some data on public library collections for communities with a main library and branches. I need the information ONLY for the collection at the main library: what is either the percentage of your collection or the raw numbers of your adult fiction collection, adult non-fiction collection, and children's/YA collection?? If you have more than these categories for your book collection that can go as an "other" category. Again, this is for public library systems with branches, but the data just for the main library. I need as much information as I can get for a meeting this Friday afternoon (Pacific time). Please contact me directly with the information. [ED. note: This came in while I was out of town, so I missed his meeting deadline] Thank you. His name is David Holt and he's been offering vapor-books to booksellers for a couple of years--i.e., requesting prepayment for books he did not have. He's been hopping around the world (including south Florida) evading the law and has now been apprehended. Below is the message on the Biblio listserv (bookdealers and collectors group) requesting proof of loss from around the world. This may now be the time to post to ACQNET.--Rosanna >Date: Sat, 18 Oct 1997 06:29:55 +0000 >From: Shoshana Edwards >To: All booktalk subscribers >Subject: Re: David Holt! Important Ladies and Gentlemen of the Trade: David Holt has been in the custody of the New Zealand Police Department since September 2, 1997. He has pled guilty to a local charge and is now being held pending extradition proceedings for indictments brought against him in the United States for fraud against a stock company and against a member of his family. He will also be charged with fraudulent use of a stolen credit card. It is imperative that we bring to the attention of the New Zealand authorities the extent of loss to book dealers all over the world. It appears that members of the British and American book trade were the hardest hit. However, it is also certain that Mr. Holt had victims in many other countries also. At this time, the judge has yet to be named for the extradition hearing. However, Dick Weatherford and I are gathering victim loss statements which will be sent via international Federal Express to the judge as soon as he or she is named. If you were defrauded by David Holt, please consider preparing and sending to Dick Weatherford a statement regarding the nature and extent of your loss. While this likely will not result in any recovery, it will go a long way to assisting in the case against Mr. Holt and perhaps may result in additional indictments. Please address your statement TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, handwrite or type your statement on your business letterhead, and send it via airmail to Richard Weatherford, P.O. Box 5, Southworth, WA 98386 USA. DO NOT ADDRESS THE ACTUAL STATEMENT TO MR. WEATHERFORD. Just the envelope. What is requested are statements of people who suffered actual loss to Mr. Holt. We do not require copies of letters; a copy of a cancelled check would be appropriate to attach to the statement, or any other corroborating evidence of your loss. If you know of colleagues who are not on this list who lost money to Mr. Holt, please contact them and give them this information. Thank you! Please do NOT send Mr. Weatherford documentation, copies of letters, etc. What is required at this point is a clear, written or typed statement, detailing how you were defrauded and the amount of money taken from you by Mr. Holt. These are called Victim Impact Statements. They will be presented to the judge once s/he is appointed as part of creating a clear and cogent picture of the extent of Mr. Holt's illegal activities and the importance of allowing him to be extradited to stand trial in the United States. They will also be made available to the prosecutors, and it is hoped they may result in further indictments. The authorities have lots of documentation. It is the personal touch of a Victim Impact Statement that can often make a difference in these kinds of hearings. The address again for sending your statement is Richard Weatherford; P.O. Box 5; Southworth, WA 98386. If you prefer, you can fax your statement to Mr. Weatherford at 360-871-5626. Stanley (Penn. State. Univ. We would like to begin by comparing those individual library bibliographic record tapes against either the Baker list and/or the Books for College Libraries list MARC tapes. Anyone know who might provide this kind of service? Thanks for your help.
