Lib.) Subject: _Global Books in Print_ on CD-ROM [ED. Note: There have been previous questions on ACQNET about this product; the archives were consulted before this question was raised] We have had GBIP+ for a couple of years, but began having problems with it several months ago. Specifically, while using the MARC tagged format in the DOS version we are repeatedly thrown out of the program (back to a DOS prompt), in an apparently random fashion. When using the Windows version with the MARC tagged format, we repeatedly get corrupted files when downloading to a disc. Of course, we need the download in the MARC format for uploading into our automated acquisitions system. We have repeatedly contacted Technical Support at Reed/Elsevier over the last several months, with no solution being offered. The problems seem to be increasing in frequency, but Technical Support no longer answers our calls or e-mail requests for help. Our GBIP+ is not networked, but is mounted on CD-ROM drive connected to a PC located in our Acquisitions Department which also runs several other programs. We do not believe the problem is in our local setup, and would like to contact any other libraries which may be experiencing this or a similar problem. Any advice will of course be welcome, and if other libraries are having problems reaching this firm's Technical Support, perhaps we can make a common approach to get their attention. The company plans to transfer the standing orders it holds for libraries to another vendor. At the present time, that vendor is unknown. I was not told what is happening to the standing orders in the interim period between closing and transfering the orders. It seems to me that this is unacceptable practice, and I will be writing to the company denying them the right to transfer my business. Judy L. Johnson, Chair Acquisitions Dept. Subject: OP dealer with good fill rate Can anyone tell me a reliable Out of Print vendor/source who has a decent fill rate? We currently use Bookhouse (not a true out of print source) to order out of print and hard to find titles but they have a low fill rate. What other sources are there out there? I would appreciate any leads. Subject: Position Announcements I noted this morning yet another position announcement on ACQFlash. There seem to be a larger than usual number of positions open right now for serials librarians, including catalogers, and acquisitions librarians. I know that I have been contacted by three different clients this summer alone asking for candidate suggestions. As a vendor and a librarian, I am concerned about this trend. All parties involved in the process, including vendors, benefit from libraries having highly competent people who have, or can develop, good acquisitions skills and who truly enjoy the work. But, does this recent spate of job openings signal a growing supply and demand crisis? If so, how do we address it? -Adrian (feel free to post these comments) At 03:38 PM 7/17/97 +0000, you wrote: >Adrian, > >Interesting question -- I suspect it's because of reorganization and retirements and it's that time of year. As for retirements, I guess my concern is whether we're getting enough new folks in the profession who are interested in acquisitions work to replace those who are retiring. -A- ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 7, No. 25 ****** END OF FILE ******
