It was all great, especially the weather, but it took me a good two weeks to get over it when I returned. So ACQNET has been on vacation for about a month. Fortunately, all my ACQNET helpers were also on vacation at the same time. As I mentioned before leaving, our spring survey concerning ACQNET's format resulted in a split opinion; half the subscribers who replied favored ACQNET staying as a newsletter format (slower) and the other half liked the idea of having ACQNET move to a moderated list format. Because of the lack of clear consensus, I offer a compromise: If you have a query that needs to be posted quickly but would normally be saved for a regular ACQNET issue (they come out about 2-3 times per month), please let me know and I will post it as an ACQFlash. I will be posting an updated welcome message and editorial policy in the next few weeks, and will incorporate this change at that time. Thanks, Eleanor (2)---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 06 Jun 1997 16:28:26 -0400 (EDT) From: Pamela Matthews (U. of Md. Note: Pamela did check the ACQNET archives, since this company has been discussed on ACQNET in the past, but she would like some up-to-date information] Hi all you ACQNETters! I'd like to ask if there's anyone using Interloc to get OP books ... and, if so, if you'd let me know a little about your experience. We have a huge backlog of OP wants and it would seem that using Interloc's matching system would be great; type in the titles and wait for someone to say "Hey, we have that!" However, I'd love to hear some success stories -- or NON-success stories -- before I take this idea any further. Thanks a lot, as always! No dealer can cover all that geography and cover it well. For OP dealers I believe you have to go with regional or subject specialists. [Ed. note: also check AcqWeb!] Ned O.Kraft Smithsonian Inst. Warzala's Response to _SLJ_ Editorial The following letter was sent to the editor of _School Library Journal_ in regards to Ms. Lillian Gerhardt's June editorial. Dear Editor, In response to Lillian N. Gerhardt's editorial about my article in the April issue of Baker & Taylor's publication, _Forecast_, Ms. Gerhardt has stretched her editorial license stating I, "deplore the fact that many collection development librarians spend hours pouring over trade media, and use the comments of the reviewers as their main decision-making mechanism." In fact, the intent of my article was an expression of the same "healthy skepticism" noted in her editorial. The skepticism that I presented is rooted in several key points of my article which Ms. Gerhardt failed to mention; notably: that most reviews are plot summaries and not evaluative; reviews of the same titles are often inconsistent; the timing of reviews in relation to the availability of titles is poor; and the number of titles reviewed is significantly lower than the number of new titles published in a given time period. The approach of Ms. Gerhardt's editorial makes it sound as if my _Forecast_ article proposed exclusion of reviews as selection criterion, when in fact, I clearly stated that, 'I love reviews,' and our organization frequently uses them for library collection development projects as required by our customers. Ms. Gerhardt is correct in one aspect; I am employed by a commercial entity in a role which selection and collection development services are provided based on a client library's requirements, thus resulting in a profit. I believe it is also fair to state that review journals, including and not limited to, _School Library Journal_, are profit-generating entities, generating profits from the sale of reviews. I believe this is why my article in _Forecast_ has obviously touched a nerve with _SLJ_'s Editor-in-Chief. I will be glad to discuss in any objective forum, the merits of reviews and other elements of selection. Perhaps some day we can do this in a manner that will benefit our profession rather than resorting to such a one-sided, emotional outburst as was represented by the June _SLJ_ editorial. Sincerely, Martin Warzala Manager, Collection Development, Baker & Taylor P.S. Please note the correct spelling of my name. I would be grateful to hear from libraries who use the new RoweCom Subscribe service, on the savings (if any) they are realizing for non-STM serials. If you collect substantially in legal serials, I'd especially appreciate information on any savings on these materials. Please respond to me directly and I will summarize for the list.
