Some background information might be helpful in understanding what has happened. Traditionally, most medical publishers had two discount schedules for the book trade: One was for "stocking wholesalers" who were appointed by the medical publishers. These vendors, such as Login Brothers, received discounts of 35% or more, and were given the exclusive right within a given territory to distribute a medical publisher's titles provided they agreed to certain levels of inventory purchasing. This tradition is very old, going back to the days when most medical books were bought by physicians or sold through small medical school bookstores. The wholesalers provided the publishers with a valuable service, stocking their books in large quantities and selling them in single copy orders to small customers. Over the years, however, the perceived need for medical book wholesalers in this tradition has changed as the market has seen the growth of large medical libraries and the decline in book purchasing by individual physicians. Medical book publishers began thinking of medical wholesalers as somewhat anachronistic, and there was growing resentment of the apparent control that they exercised over certain market segments. The other trade discount schedule applied to all the rest of us, library book suppliers who bought medical books, whether for approval plans and inventory in larger quantities or in small quantities specifically to fill orders. These discounts range from 20% to 25%, depending upon publisher. We also can and do buy medical books from the stocking wholesalers, often getting better service and comparable discounts. In April Mosby announced the end of "stocking wholesalers" discounts of 35%. At the same time they informed us that discounts would now be 25% for all vendors, whether a wholesaler like Login Brothers or a library supplier like Academic Book Center. Obviously, Mosby has decided to stop distributing through appointed stocking wholesalers and now sell directly to library suppliers, small medical bookstores, and individual medical book buyers. Mosby has offered a higher discount, 30%, to library suppliers who are willing to give them the names of customers, the titles bought, and the amount of sales, on a monthly basis, in machine readable form. This discount reduction for medical wholesalers like Login Brothers has obviously precipitated a decision to quit distributing Mosby titles. For library suppliers like us there is no real effect on our ability or willingness to supply Mosby titles. The discount to us remains unchanged, and we will continue to supply Mosby titles along with the thousands of other publishers we handle. I know of only two, _NEWLAWBOOKS_ and _NEW-BOOKS_. Am I missing any? This has me thinking that perhaps a list dedicated to announcements, moderated and formatted, might be something that needs to be developed for those librarians who wish to be made aware electronically of new titles. If this comes to fruition, would this be something your listserve participants might find worthwhile? Any advice would be appreciated. Sincerely, Larry Krumenaker +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Mon, 02 Jun 1997 14:20:03 -0400 From: Hermograph Press Subject: Reaching ACQNET subscribers about a book (part 2) Dear Ms. Cook, I understand all about Internet advertising being unwanted! I get quite a bit of it myself. That was the reason I inquired first with you about your list rather than trying to just join, post, leave and get flamed. [Ed: this is not possible since ACQNET is a moderated newsletter] You are kind to offer to re-edit my words and post on ACQNET. Please do. Use my email address "hermograph@compuserve.com" and my URL http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hermograph as contact points. I should clarify that my proposed book announcement list wouldn't be advertising per se. The information I would send by email, to those who want it, would be the kind of stuff you'd see if you went into B&N to browse...title, publisher, the "numbers," and the text of the back of the book. In addition, the usual who, what, where for ordering. No reviews. Having run the _Publisher's Weekly_, _Library Journal_ etc. route once already, I would be the first place to find out about books that are *out* because we'd work off the finished copy and get the word out within a couple of days, not weeks or even months (LJ still hasn't published a review of our latest book and it's been out a month already--and they got the galley months ago). Anyway BOOKANNOUNCE would be more like a daily PW broadsheet, and I'll also post on a web site if this works out. In fact, if the books get too numerous from the publishers (the only persons in this that would pay, the librarians wouldn't) I'd probably trim the mailings to very brief info with a web page URL to check the cover and rest of the information. Much appreciated, Larry Krumenaker (3)---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 02 Jun 1997 14:36:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Susan Smith (State U. of West Georgia) Subject: Microfiche Replacements We need to replace some missing or damaged microfiche from the Readex version of the Sabin and Evan's series. Does anyone know the current address or phone # for this company? I have looked in the _Library Journal_ Source listing. I searched the archives of ACQNET and didn't find anything, so I thought I'd send you a message.
