Libraries) Subject: on-line requests It's been interesting to see that many acquisitions folks are using the web so creatively, designing internet "request" forms for their patrons to suggest purchases. However does it strike anyone else as odd that we are designing these mini-systems for requesting? Shouldn't our systems vendors be doing this? Wouldn't it make more sense for these requesting systems to be part of our acquisitions modules rather than outside those modules? It seems to me that very few systems vendors have developed systems that allow patron requests on line. I guess we're all just adapting to the absence of that feature. Ned O.Kraft Smithsonian Inst. There was a great deal of interest in my sharing the results, so here is a listing of libraries currently offering order forms on their web page. Who receives these electronic forms varies from library to library, but no one indicated the ability of the form to interface with their OPAC. Also, most libraries still print these requests on paper, to integrate them into regular workflow. www.swarthmore.edu/Library. Look under 'Library information and requests', then 'New materials for the library'. http://palamedes.hamilton.edu/cgi/acqform.htm http://www.lib.fit.edu. Prices on books tend to rise as new publisher catalogs are issued and many of us order books with estimated prices on our orders. Online systems that measure discount by the discount amount on an invoice may miss the impact of shipping rates (which can substantially reduce net discount). I don't think there is any substitute for manually adding up invoice list prices and comparing them to the net price paid (after shipping but before tax). Fortunately for those of us who monitor discounts in this way, there are not a great many vendors whose discounts need to be monitored. Drake (St. Bonaventure U.) Subject: E.B.S. Dear Colleagues: I have been using E.B.S. as one of my major jobbers for over two years, and was shocked to receive their January 22, l997 letter advising me that they were going out of business. We received just three titles in their final shipment and I have had to place the remaining 223 outstanding titles with either other jobbers or directly with the publishers. To compound the problem, here at St. Bonaventure University, our fiscal year ends on May 3l, and no carry-over of funds to the next fiscal year is permitted. I would be interested in hearing from those of you who have been put in this same predicament by the closing of E.B.S. I am particularly interested in learning how you solved reorder problems. Please send your responses to me not to the list. Thank you. ********************************** Martha A. Subject: Collection Development Policies & Textbooks The Robert J. Terry Library at Texas Southern University has been asked to provide textbooks for our students to check out. By textbooks, the requestor means the books that students are required to buy for each of their classes each semester. The requestor is also asking that these books be allowed to circulate. At this time we are drafting our reply and would like input from other Academic and University Libraries about their collection development policies concerning the purchase and availability of textbooks. We are a small community college and cannot afford to purchase a module from III or one of the big vendors for our orders. We need something to use in-house that will do bookkeeping, key word-searching, and will, of course show the basics of who ordered, when and what. Thank you for any help you can give.
