I am also submitting this query to COLLDV-L; please excuse the duplication. Since ferrets became legal to own in Massachusetts last year, the Massachusetts Ferret Friends (MaFF) has been trying to distribute good information on ferret care to the community. We are finding that the few books on ferrets in public libraries contain outdated information (eg. no mention of required vaccinations), and in some cases focus on activities which are illegal (eg. hunting with ferrets) or impractical (eg. breeding -- most ferrets are sold neutered). This situation is rather frustrating, since the first place a person motivated enough to learn about a pet before they get one is generally the library. We want people to have enough information to be able to decide whether a ferret really is the right pet for them, and to care for it properly if they decide to get one. We would like to start a program to get a good book or two into libraries, with the public's help. We have found one such book. Unfortunately, single copy prices for this book are very expensive. What we propose is the following: 1. Person orders the book through MaFF's library program, and provides the contact information for the acquisition librarian at the library to which they want to donate the book. 2. If possible, MaFF searches the library's OPAC to make sure that they don't already have the book. MaFF contacts the librarian about the proposed donation. 3. If the library wants the book, MaFF sends the book with cataloging information to the library. If the library does not want the book, MaFF returns the donor's check or verifies that the donor would be willing to donate to another library. MaFF would also maintain a list of libraries that want the book, and would match them with donors who either strike out with their own library, or just want to make a donation to any library. We would not confine this program to Massachusetts, but open it to any U.S. library. If you were the proposed recipient librarian, how would you feel about this? What would make this program more attractive to you? Have you heard of any similar programs? How were they received? Is there any information besides the MARC record that you would like that would help make cataloging easier (ie. lower cost)? Can you suggest any alternative ways we could conduct this program? We have checked with the publisher about a library binding for this book, but unfortunately they do not make one. If you were the recipient library, would you rather receive the book bound by us, or sent as is (it's a 9 x 11 softcover) to be bound by your own service? Any comments, suggestions, or questions are welcome. Please send these directly to me, and I will post a summary in a week or so. -- Lee one of the Massachusetts Ferret Friends lmckee@uso.channel1.com (2)---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 05 Feb 1997 08:21:08 -0800 (PST) From: Margit Smith (Univ. of San Diego) Subject: Barcodes on journals I wonder if those of you who have used the publisher's barcode on the back of a journal for check-in purposes etc. would tell me how it works, what kind of equipment one needs, what exactly it can do, etc. Thanks in advance, I will appreciate any information I can get. How many libraries buy case books and recommended or required materials? Do your faculty members specifically request certain titles; do you purchase annual updates and supplements automatically? It's rather expensive and really geared toward preserving rare materials, but it may be the answer for some situations. Their name is Bridgeport National Bindery and their number is 1-800-223-5083. Other binderies may offer the service as well. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% % Alice Pidgeon apidgeon@lawlib.law.pace.edu % Head of Technical Services Phone: 914-422-4280 % Pace University Law Library Fax: 914-422-4139 % 78 N. Subject: RE: More on Electronic FORMS: Order Forms for Selectors on the Web Acquisitions librarians are invited to check out the electronic order request form for library selectors/bibliographers which is accessible from our Acquisitions Webpages. This is not a simple e-mail form, but includes all the fields which we require for the submission of orders including fund code, name of selector, etc.: http://www-lib.usc.edu/Info/Acqui/orderform.html The submitted forms go to a collective "orders" e-mail address where requests are received by ordering staff. This form for selectors is not connected to our OPAC (WEBCat). We are setting up simple forms for our library users, however, which are accessible to the general public through the OPAC. Suggestions from the public have to be routed to appropriate library selectors first to review, though, before Acquisitions staff can process them. ................................................................... Schwitzner (North Central College) Subject: Brief Summary & Thanks: Gift Books in Acquisitions System First, thanks to all who replied to my request on the entry of gift book titles into automated acquisitions systems (ACQNET 6:38). I received some very interesting responses, and I hope to incorporate some of the features of your processes soon. SUMMARY: I received fifteen responses from libraries that were currently entering some or all gifts into their automated systems. Seven of these confirmed that they entered the titles only after the books had been reviewed and selected for addition. Most of these used MARC records for entry into their systems. Of the eight remaining, at least four libraries entered all gifts, while the other four did not indicate a distinction. Two libraries indicated that they participate in exchange programs using lists produced from their systems. In one library, the circulation department tracks all gifts received. Another library uses circulation statistics to determine whether a duplicate title should be added. Once again, thanks to all who responded. You have been very helpful. ************************************************************ * Ted Schwitzner tcs@noctrl.edu * * Acquisitions & Cataloging Librarian, Science Liaison * * Oesterle Library, North Central College * * Naperville, Illinois * ************************************************************* ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 7, No. 7 ****** END OF FILE ******
