Subject: Happy 7th year of ACQNET! With this issue, ACQNET starts its seventh volume and year of existence. ACQNET's New Year Resolution for 1997 is to get discussion going again. In the next issue we are going to feature a summary of what is happening with the controversial Baker & Taylor outsourcing contract being used by the Hawaii Public Library system. Your Editor has been collecting information from a number of sources about this topic since posting an ACQflash from Baker & Taylor right after Thanksgiving. We look forward to having this topic generate some thoughtful responses. There have been changes to the ACQNET Editorial and Technical Boards. Carol Chamberlain (a charter member of the Editorial Board) and Marylou Hale (who also served as Indexer and Subscription Manager) have stepped down from the Editorial Board as of 1997. Both of these individuals have served ACQNET for many years and will be missed. I would also like to publicly thank the other members of the Editorial and Technical Boards for their constant support throughout the year. We would like to welcome Jack Montgomery, Technical Services Librarian, University of Missouri Law Library, to the Editorial Board, and Anne McGreer, of Indiana University, to the Technical Board. Anne will be assuming the responsibilities for indexing and managing the subscriber lists. In fact, she has already started! There are also a number of volunteers who are going to assist with special projects. I will be describing these in more detail soon. This issue is basically odds and ends to catch up from the holidays, mostly responses to queries posted in December. You can consider ACQNET "back" from the holidays now. I hope to receive postings on more in-depth topics from subscribers. The biggest criticism about ACQNET is that there is not enough discussion. With that in mind, I would like to encourage, challenge and yes! perhaps even beg my colleagues to find the time and inspiration to bring topics of interest to ACQNET for discussion. I am particularly interested in what concerns publishers and vendors have about the changes that are occurring in our world and how those of us who handle library acquisitions processes can assist in the transition. I would like thank all subscribers for your patronage. This coming year should be an exciting one for all of us. I sincerely hope that ACQNET will be useful to you in your daily work and I welcome comments from you anytime. A long time ago I had been told that it was acceptable to provide the original purchase price of hard bound books as their value. Also a long time ago when library catalogue files were on index cards, one could search such files and at the end of the listing find the price the library placed on the book (for replacement value?). Do you know of any of the electronic card catalogues that provide the book price like the old index cards did? I have searched LOCIS and CARL and find no book values listed. Is there a way to put a reasonable value on old books by searching the WWW or other sources? Thanks for your advice. ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 7 No. 1 ****** END OF FILE ******
