Volta. We deal with them directly in Italy: Franco A. Volta C.I.R.T. P.O. Box 7254 00100 Roma Italy Fax 6 4826073 f.volta@agora.stm.it They also have a US address (untried by me) : Franco A. Volta C.I.R.T. PO Box 2591 New York NY 10185 They have a WWW page at : http://italia.hum.utah.edu/gruppo/volta/cirt/html C.I.R.T. stands for the "International Center for the Retrieval of Ancient and Rare Books," which is a branch of the Franco Volta company. They claim to "locate thousands of ancient texts, manuscripts, back issues of magazines and any book or document which cannot be found through the usual commercial channels" and will also supply copies within the appropriate copyright laws. *********************************************************** Alison Grant e-mail : a.grant@auckland.ac.nz Acquisitions Department phone : 64 9 3737599 ext 8056 University of Auckland Library fax : 64 9 3737401 Private Bag 92019 Auckland New Zealand *********************************************************** (4)--------------------------------------------------------------- [Ed. note: It is also helpful to query your ILS vendor's list (if they have one) for ideas on how to process gifts within a particular automated system. Many of us do it in order to track where the material is located within the cataloging process.] Date: Wed, 11 Dec 1996 07:45:49 -0600 From: Steve Craven (Decatur, IL PL) Subject: RE: Use of Automated Acquisitions Systems for Tracking Gifts (ACQNET 6:38) Concerning the gift acquisitions question - here at the Decatur Public Library, we are on automated acquisition on CLSI (LIBS 100+) - all of our gifts, GPO, and others for which no invoicing is necessary (prepaid SO items, for example), are entered into the system on a "GENERIC" purchase order, with the generic parameters set at 100% discount and 0% encumbrance. This way, the workflow is identical as that for any other items - the MARC record is entered at the same point and in the same manner as regular orders - preparatory to the creation of the purchase order in the system. Subject: RE: Use of Automated Acquisitions Systems for Tracking Gifts In reply to Ted Schwitzner's query, Lehigh University's acquisitions activities occur within the Sirsi Unicorn ILS. We do enter gifts into our database, but only those which we will retain and have cataloged. We import the bib records as soon as possible following the decision to retain, so as to prevent our unintentional ordering of duplicates. Some of the material is quite recent. Although ordinarily gift items as a category are accorded a fairly low priority by the cataloging staff, on occasion there is a user request to move something through the system faster. The catalogers are happy to do this, providing that there is a specific request for a specific title. These procedures have worked well thus far, because the users are served and no one on the staff is put under terrible pressure. It is important that the bib records are in the system and that the gift pseudo-order reflects the fact that the item is on site. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Helen P.
