Subj: Information on CMA consultants Greetings-- I am looking for information on a organization called CMA (Charles Major and Associates). The university is considering their services to examine business procedures within the institution, to examine purchasing practices in the library (both serials and monographs) and possibly to act as our agent for purchasing published materials at prices they negotiate with the publishers. Mr. Major acknowledges never having dealt with an academic library, but has acted in behalf of law libraries and corporate libraries. Any information would be appreciated. We would particularly like to know how helpful CMA's analysis and proposals proved to be and how well they performed as providers of published materials. Please respond to me personally. I would be glad to summarize responses for the list, if there is any desire for that. If you would prefer to communicate via the telephone, email your number to me and I will call you at your convenience. Thanks in advance! I have checked all my sources here and also the directories of publishers on AcqWeb. Martin (Seattle Univ.) Subject: Approval Plans Fellow Acqnetters-- I would like to hear from those of you who have set-up limited-base approval plans (i.e.: limited dollar amounts and limited subject areas) with broad-based approval vendors (such as BNA, YBP, etc.). This library is considering a plan involving $75,000-$100,000 per year in 7 subject areas (education, psychology, nursing, software engineering, theology/religion, public administration, business/economics). I am interested specifically in the following: -- could you share a copy of any RFP/RFI that you used in vendor selection? -- how well has approval plan worked for you? -- what was your experience in setting up the plan? -- did you involve faculty members in the selection of specific subjects/LC classes prior to the profiling? Please respond directly to me and I will summarize for the list. Subject: Thoughts on Publisher Announcements Increasingly I am asked (it's now several times a week) by publishers how to announce their publications to librarians -- what listserve to use. We have one for law libraries (newlawbooks-l), but I know of no others for any other types of librarians. Now this could be because I am in law (not to be confused with an in-law ;-). So... is this in fact the case? Do you know of any place at all where publishers can announce to subscribing librarians about their new books? Is this worth discussing on ACQNET? I'm thinking maybe AcqWeb should collect a list of such e-mail lists. Wouldn't it be interesting if law librarians indeed have the only one. (Is there something like this in the collection development realm?) Thanks, AB ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 6, No. 25 ****** END OF FILE ******
