The program took a look at some of the basic considerations to be made for building a home page and at the development of AcqWeb, the "mother" of all acquisitions home pages. Robin Dixon, Internet Specialist and Reference Librarian at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Library, talked about the process of developing, implementing, evaluating, and revising the home page at the NASA/Goddard Library (URL: http://www-library.gsfc.nasa.gov). She mentioned some basic rules which should be applied for designing a home page and discussed the in-house home page which is a mock up of the library home page and used for all staff to have input on before making changes to the library home page which the public uses. Mike Grabenstein, UNIX Administrator at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Library, covered the technical aspects of loading and maintaining home pages. He talked about different hardware and software configurations and some of the implications of each type to give the audience a sense of what is involved on the technical end of having a home page. Anna Belle Leiserson, Collection Development Librarian and Web Master of the Vanderbilt University Law Library, provided the final section of the program discussing her philosophy of the Web, as well as the history and philosophy behind her development of AcqWeb. (URL: http://www.library.vanderbilt.edu/law/acqs/acqs.html). She offered during her presentation and in her handout a number of internet sources for using the Web, both as a general resource, for acquisitions resources, and for some basic Web tools. Her handout, for those who did not get a copy or could not attend the session, is available at: http://www.library.vanderbilt.edu/law/acqs/ala.html. -- Stephen D. We order LC material direct and we prepay. LC appears, however, not to be acting on our orders or our claims. I don't seem to be able to get any material out of them until I call on the phone and complain. I've heard rumors that the CDS staff has been cut and the orders are piling up, but that's just a rumor. Anyone having a similar experience? ******************************************** Ned Kraft, Smithsonian Institution Libraries, Acquisitions Dept Washington, DC 20560 --- Phone 202-357-1994 FX 202-786-2443 BITNET: LIBEM042@SIVM.SI.EDU (3)---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 16 Jul 1996 08:03:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Donna LaFollette (Cal State U-Northridge) Subject: Approval vendor for business books? We are searching for a good approval vendor for business titles. Right now, our main approval vendors are Yankee Book Peddler, Academic Book Center, and Blackwell North America. We have used Baker & Taylor and Midwest Library Service heavily in the past, but we no longer use them. If you have been pleased with your approval vendor in regards to business titles, please forward their name(s) to me at dlafollette@csun.edu Thank you in advance. Ciao! What I'm having trouble with, is printing out our 3X5 order slips that we use for ordering, cataloging, filing, etc. It seems that neither program will let us downsize paper to 3x5 and neither company seems to be able to help. We are wondering if our 3x5's are obsolete and what other libraries are using if not them? What do you use as paper copy for orders or do you do it all on line? Do you still use paper p.o.'s and, if not, how do you keep track of what has arrived and what hasn't? We are trying to cut down on paper use, but can't seem to get away from the order slips yet. If you e-mail me privately, I'll compile answers and send back to those interested. Thanks in advance. We would like to know what other libraries do with these records. In our own library they now appear in our OPAC, and are gradually increasing in numbers, meaning that users are retrieving records for items that are actually not available in the library. We would be most interested in hearing what the policies are of other libraries regarding such records. Questions that come to mind: 1. Are records for missing books, or orders cancelled integrated in the OPAC? 2. If so, how long are the records kept in the OPAC? 3. If they are deleted, are these records stored in any way in some other file, or on some other medium (paper printout, microfiche, etc.)? 4. Are attempts made to reorder missing and cancelled books, and on what basis? Any thoughts or advice on this issue would be most appreciated.
