I have subscribed this list a few months ago and I think it's really helpful to my job. I am utilising INTERNET to do my job like the ways that follow: 1. Searching publishers' or vendors' homepages for new book information and validation 2. Searching other libraries' catalogs to find appropriate materials 3. Ordering via e-mail or vendor's ordering service system like Blackwell's NTO 4. Asking questions to lists like _ACQNET_ I guess there should be someone who utilising INTERNET for acquisition task better than me, because I'm just a novice. So, I want gather and share information regarding this - how to utilise INTERNET for acquisitions? Mostly I want to know is it possible for INTERNET service to replace the traditional bibliographic tools which have been used for selection and validation in the past? If possible, I want to be heard from every subscriber of this list. Thank you so much for your patient reading and I'm so sorry I'm not fluent in English. Please feel free to respond off-list. Does anyone know of an out-of-print dealer that supplies government publications? The researchers here use our govt. pub. collection quite a bit and when something "walks" and we have to find a replacement it can be difficult to find a source. Thanks in advance for any help. The advantage is that you can sometimes get plays more easily, in hardcover editions, than you could by trying to go through Samuel French or the other vendors selling scripts & performance rights. The danger here is that you must respond within a certain period or you are sent the default selections, which can easily happen when the monthly notice gets in that big pile of get-to-whenever stuff, which is where everybody puts the urgent stuff they should have given to you more directly (you have one or more of those piles, don't you?). If you can deal with that somehow, you might find Fireside useful. Another method I used for plays is to find a good prebinder (Story House did well by me some time ago on this) and set up special orders for Samuel French and other vendor's scripts to be purchased and prebound in hardcovers. I stocked up on plays that were hard to get that way (especially those that show up in collections but are long out-of-print in individual versions). The prebound scripts are nice to circulate and hold up better than the stapled originals. ################################################### Dennis G. We too use it to obtain new plays and scripts of recently released movies (i.e. Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibilities). It has worked out well since I have been here, about 9 months. It works just like a CD or Tape club. We get a notice with a catalog describing the month's featured selections and other titles available. I check our catalog to see if we already own any of the featured selections (usually 1 or 2 titles). If we don't own them, I do nothing and they are automatically shipped to us. If we do own them I can indicate on the response card that I don't want anything shipped at this time. The titles are relatively inexpensive: between $8.00-$12.00 usually. Here is the address and phone number I have. Fireside Theatre Member Service Center 6550 E. 30th Street P.O. Krieger (Gettysburg College) Subject: RE: Fireside Theatre books We've used Fireside Theatre Book Club for years as a sort of "approval plan" for plays in a hardback format. We have a small theater dept. here and no one has the time to look for new titles to add to the collection. This provides an a good way of getting important mainstream playscripts in a library-friendly format. All I have to do is check this month's offering for duplication. The downside is that they told me they no longer offer memberships to libraries, just to individuals. This means I'm on their mailing list and we have to pay sales tax.
