Subject: Acquisitions and Serials SIG joint meeting minutes MINUTES - JOINT MEETING NOTIS ACQUISITIONS SIG AND NOTIS SERIALS SIG ALA Midwinter Meeting, 23 January, 1996 San Antonio Acquisitions SIG Current Chair - Barbara Albee, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis Incoming Chair - Lynn Cline, Southwest Missouri State University Serials SIG Co-Chair - Marjorie Wilhite, University of Iowa Co-Chair - Beth Weston, George Washington University Barbara Albee convened the meeting, noted the minutes from the '95 NUGM session that were distributed on NOITISACQ, and introduced current members of the Acquisitions SIG Steering Committee. She then called for volunteers to assume positions on the Acquisitions SIG Steering Committee as a number of current members will end their term this year. If anyone is interested please contact Barbara Albee (balbee@library.iupui.edu) or Lynn Cline (LSC085f@vma.smsu.edu). Beth Weston introduced the steering committee of the Serials SIG, and called for volunteers for that group, noting that one person would be rotating off the committee. Joyce McDonough, of Columbia University and moderator of NOTISACQ, reported on NLUC (NOTIS Library Users Council) activity, and brought the group up to date on NOTIS LMS release timetables: January '96 6.0 April '96 6.2 - major circulation changes - implementation of the Columbia guide screens in the PAC. 6.1 - PACLink and PACLoan enhancements. July '96 6.3 - GTO updates (affects RLIN sites) - fund record purges - PAC enhancements - PACLink enhancements Oct. '96 6.4 - Project 2000 (system adaptations to calendar rollover) - Keyword in staff mode Joyce also noted that all basic coding had been completed for the Circulation rewrite, some fixes had been completed for bill & fine, and that some changes in quick reports were in process. Joyce once again reminded the group that she will be rotating off NLUC this year, and that individuals who had the time, experience, and interest should consider volunteering for that responsibility. Barbara Albee then asked for a report on 6.0 experience up to this point from those who had been working with it in beta. At this stage it had no significant impact upon acquisitions functions, although there was discussion of difficulties related to authority record transfer. Ben Burrows from Ameritech presented a brief update on HORIZON. Barbara Albee also reported from current experience with HORIZON at IUPUI, noting that they hoped to be testing 4.2 in March and have it up by 1 July. Loading began in August working initially with the PAC and Circulation. Work then began on Acquisitions, Serials, and Cataloging. Some of the areas being worked on include: - hierarchical bibliographic structure - authority control enhancements - enhanced MHLD development of system navigation in Serials, and ability to shut off prediction patterns. - multiple bill to/ship to as in LMS Beth Weston then reported on the NUGM '96 Planning Session held on Friday, 19 January. NUGM will be held Wednesday - Friday, 18-20 September. The opening general session will start at 1:30 on Wednesday. A suggestion was made in the planning session for an opening session speaker who would represent a general outside view that would be related to information systems, as well as a fairly concise report from one or two Ameritech administrators on the general trends in ALS activities. Registration will be $350. Fee waivers : - up to 4 for 1 moderator and three presenters for a 1 1/2 hour session. - up to 3 for 1 moderator and two presenters for a 1 hour session - 1/2 fee waived for a presenter at a poster session. Topics for Serials SIG sessions include: 1. Using OPR's with SAS reports for Binding Management Information 2. Downloading data from OPR's to Produce Management Reports 3. Ask the Experts 4. An LSER session. There was some discussion of the handouts/abstract books. Given the difficulties encountered with the WEB access last year and the generally high cost of registration, there was some feeling that books should be included. A suggestion was made that in registration, a provision for a check-off be made for a limited number of books for a site. Barbara Albee then briefly reported on the Acquisitions SIG Steering Committee meeting from Saturday, 20 January, again noting the rotation of the committee and called for additional volunteers. She then reviewed the Acquisitions sessions slated for NUGM '96, which will include: - using NOTIS circulation data to study approval plans - automated bindery operations - role of acquisitions in acquiring records as well as books - a session on LMS/Horizon comparison - Tech Services Home Pages - Ask the Experts - Partnerships between Acquisitions and Public Services Barbara Albee also announced that the Acquisitions and Serials SIGs planned to have a joint session at the ALA annual meeting in New York in July, probably the morning of Tuesday, 9 July. Subject: RE: BIP+ for ordering (ACQNET 6:10) In reply to Dennis Van Arsdale's (Westark Community College) query about using the CD-ROM _Books In Print Plus_ for Ingram for ordering. He says: "_BIP+_ is not reliable on noting paperbacks versus hardcover. We get a number of items that were marked as hardcover that turn out to be paperback, and sometimes vice versa. I don't know how much of that is Bowker's inputting and how much is due to publishers' information, but it often leaves the binding in doubt." This is an obvious question, but I'll ask it anyway: have you double-checked to make sure that when the binding doesn't match, the copy sent to you was for the same ISBN? In the event that the binding we requested is not available, our dealers are instructed to supply any binding. Steve Johnson Acquisitions Unit R. M. Goodman (Jefferson Parish PL) Subject: Re: _Books in Print Plus_, paper vs. hardback & ordering I have also found that _Books In Print Plus_ is sometimes inaccurate about paperback/hardback formats. My library, the Jefferson Parish Public Library in Metairie, LA, also has BT Link from Baker & Taylor. We find BT Link much more reliable in this, so we check many items in both, but use the format found in BT Link. In 1995 we had a book contract with Ingram for both hardbacks and paperbacks. We ordered each on separate orders. This year we are getting paperbacks from Ingram and hardbacks from Baker & Taylor. I have not complained to Bowker-Reed about the problem. We also check publisher's catalogs when necessary. We have had it since they switched our old CTA to BIP. We have found that the Canadian coverage is very poor and the prices quoted are often not in the proper currency. Now we haven't gotten a disc since November. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? We need a decent source for Canadian publications, and this is not working. What are others doing? Thanks. The hardest part is learning the searching quirks of the Library of Congress database. Basically, in one window, I open a telnet session to the Library of Congress, find the record and display the record in its marc format. I open a second window running an Innopac order session. The third window contains the interface. One click on the "capture" interface loads the LC marc record into that interface, and a second click on the "create" part of the interface puts the information into an Innopac record. I add order information. The interface was developed in-house specifically for this purpose. It works great, and gives more complete information to our patrons.
