Subject: PC LANs in Acquisitions Departments I would like to correspond with acquisitions librarians of large academic libraries whose departments are currently using a PC network in performing routine procedures. Our Acquisitions Department is interested in developing a plan to migrate our work procedures over to such an environment. We would like to learn of others' experiences and to pick up a few tips on how to best develop our plan. The questions we have are related to office management; Can you access your OPAC, online bibliographic utility, cd-rom server, etc. from one PC? and; Is communication between staff improved? Also, in terms of administration, should we administer our own LAN or would it be better to use an existing PC LAN? If you are interested in discussing the administration and use of PC LANs in acquisitions departments please reply directly to me via e-mail. Any helpful responses will be greatly appreciated. Du Bois Library University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA 01002 (2)--------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 18 Dec 95 16:00:45 (+0000) From: Lynne Branch Brown (YBP) Subject: YBP Folio I'd like to offer a response to the questions that have recently been raised on ACQNET regarding YBP's Folio. As most veteran Internet users are aware, traffic on the Internet can have a dramatic effect on response times when accessing systems remotely. YBP's Folio product is no different than most if you are trying to access it via telnet during high traffic periods. Many customers find response time is significantly better early in the morning (Eastern time) before the West coast is active. Yankee heard concerns about response time at our Folio Users Group meeting last February, and have been working since then to develop an alternative that would address as much of the problem as we can. We'll be releasing a new version of Folio, with a whole new interface and access capability, in January, 1996. Called GOBI, (Global Online Bibliographic Information), it will be accessible via a graphical user interface through the World Wide Web. As such, response times will be identical to those you experience with other Web products. We'll be demonstrating GOBI at our second annual users group meeting - at the ALA Midwinter Conference, on Sunday, Jan. 21, from 4:30-5:30 pm at the Marriott Rivercenter, Conference Rm 17. We'd like feedback on some issues which might have come up at other libraries who may have already established CD-Rom collections. One question is what vendors have proved to be good for CD-Rom material? We are particularly interested in dealing with a vendor who can provide us with detailed product information; i.e. platforms available for the title in question, does it come with a floppy disc, any other particulars about loading or operating the product which would be helpful to know in making the product available to public library clients. The vendor catalogs which we have seen so far are not wholly satisfactory in providing complete information. Has anyone found a vendor who is willing to set up a library-specific profile concerning the kind of product which would be most suitable? It could be especially helpful to work with a reliable vendor who would work with us directly on this. Any information on vendor performance, fill-rate, discount schedules and product reliability would also be helpful. This message is being cross-posted to the ACQNET and Publib lists, so please excuse possible duplication. And, thank you to anyone who responds! ****************************************************** Margaret Cleaver Supervising Librarian Santa Monica Public Library 1343 6th St. ** Santa Monica, CA 90401 (310) 458-8630 ** mcleaver@pen.ci.santa-monica.ca.us ****************************************************** (4)---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 04 Jan 1996 16:57:40 -0600 (CST) From: Mary Dabney Wilson (Univ. of Texas-Arlington) Subject: Re: Interloc The University of Texas at Arlington received a working demonstration of Interloc by a local OP dealer in September, 1995. The demonstration was arranged by and paid for by Interloc. We took about 23 or 30 wants and found approximately 10, some of which were listed by multiple dealers with a nice array of prices. All prices that we saw were extremely reasonable. We purchased all titles we found and were delighted to note that in those specific cases, no shipping charges were levied. All dealers that we used were willing to ship with invoice, and none required prepayment. One particular title was listed by about 10 dealers and the prices ranged from $9.50 to over $50.00. We were favorably impressed and have paid our Interloc fees. We are just about ready to integrate it into our procedures for ordering OP. However, the language in the license agreement has to be examined and approved by a centralized university office, and that's where we are with implementation at this point. We don't have tons of OP requests, but believe that the price of the service is reasonable for what we expect to get out of it.
