Kelley (Univ. of VA) Subject: Address for Janus Press In response to Marcia Kingsley's question about Janus Press, the correct address is RR 1 Box 53AA, West Burke VT 05871. Perhaps the reason that she couldn't find a telephone listing is that this is a very small press, actually a hand-press (I think), and has no telephone listing as a business. The proprietor is Claire Van Vliet who probably is listed. We happen to have this rather esoteric information because the title in question was selected for addition to the University of Virginia Library's collections as the 4 millionth volume, with appropriate ceremonies, etc., just this month. ************************************************************* Cornelia A. Subject: Government documents vendors The Kennedy School Library at Harvard University has been ordering most of its U.S. government documents directly from the U.S. G.P.O. As many of you know, this can be a very frustrating and time- consuming endeavor. We would like to find a reliable vendor to handle our G.P.O. orders - does anyone know of such a vendor? What about Bernan-UNIPUB? Any suggestions would be most welcome! Please send all responses to me directly at beata@ksgfin.harvard.edu because I am not on the list. Thanks! Subject: Book reviews and selections - A summary Thank you for the great responses we've had to our inquiry about book reviews and their use. To summarize: -- Reviews should be concise, credible (not publisher blurbs), meaningful, prompt, comparative and opinionated if possible, specific about the intended audience, and alert to shortcomings such as lack of index, poor photographs, or a title that does not reflect contents. -- Responders said they don't use online reviews (except Choice, when it was free), and that hardcopy reviews are more practical because they can be looked at while doing something else, e.g. phone reference, desk ref, etc. -- Gaps include small presses, societies, CD-ROMs, books in series, electronic sources. We are grateful for the feedback (and the affirmation that we are on track). Send us your snail-mail address if you want to see sample copies of SciTech Book News and/or Reference & Research Book News. Also, we want to know: 1) A study we conducted with several publishers (details are available on request) seems to show that sales of reviewed books are a remarkable 26% higher than unreviewed books. Does this seem credible to you? Do reviews influence book selection to such a degree? 2) Does anyone make use of publishers' complete catalogs online (or in print)? (We suspect that not many find them useful.) Brent Zupp Book News Inc. Jobbers won't work with Gordon so I had to order direct. Gordon does not respond to orders or claims and when I call I get one of those voice mail recordings saying that the mailbox is full, I should call again later. Has anyone got the scoop on Gordon. Are they defunct or just inept? ******************************************** Ned Kraft, Smithsonian Institution Libraries, Acquisitions Dept Washington, DC 20560 --- Phone 202-357-1994 FX 202-786-2443 BITNET: LIBEM042@SIVM.SI.EDU (5)---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 05 Dec 1994 17:06:09 -0500 From: Bruce Compton (VTLS, Inc.)
