I have set a bookmark to get back to them. My feeling is that as more publishers add their holdings, it will become more valuable. Some of the listings seem fairly complete, some are just their new titles, and some are pretty sketchy. It does seem worth setting bookmarks and keeping tabs on the process. Perhaps we need to encourage publishers to continue to investigate it from their direction. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Peter Stevens (U. of Washington) Subject: Publishers Catalogs on the Internet Date: Mon, 31 Oct 1994 14:34:26 -0500 In answer to Marcia Whipple in ACQNET 4:52, I make rare use of publishers catalogs on the Internet, accessing a list of about 150 publishers (from Addison-Wesley to Ziff-Davis) maintained on the Web at the Yahoo Mosaic site at Stanford. The http address is: http://akebono.stanford.edu/yahoo/Business/Corporations/Publishing/ Usually, if I have a question about a particular title which is not in OCLC, the publishers catalog, even if available, has no citation. Even customer service numbers often do not know about titles in the publishing mainstream that have not moved up to the seasonal announcement stage. Only editorial departments usually have that information (or the author or editor). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Rae-Anne Locke (Griffith U. Library) Subject: Publisher's E-mail Address Date: Mon, 31 Oct 1994 22:16:19 -0500 Dear Acqnet, Would anyone have an e-mail address for The University of California Press? Could you also tell me if there is a source of publisher and /or vendor e-mail addresses? Thanking you in advance. Rae-Anne Locke Griffith University Library Nathan, Queensland Australia (2)--------------------------------------------------------------- From: Paul Wrynn (NYU Medical Center Library) Subject: Missing Journal Issues Date: Mon, 31 Oct 1994 10:06:00 -0500 Does anyone keep statistics on the number/percentage of journal issues that were received by the library but cannot be found later in the year, such as at binding time? At NYU Medical Center, the disappearance of received issues has skyrocketed, with 63 1993 issues needing replacement. With a subscription list of about 1800 titles, this amounts to 1 out of every 28 journals needing a replacement for the year. This does NOT include issues that are needed but were never received. If anyone would like to share their statistics on journal loss, please also advise on the following: 1- whether ID cards are checked before entry to the library is given (we do not) 2- whether bags are checked, even randomly, when patrons leave the library (we do not) Thank you. (3)______________________________________________________________ From: Peter Stevens (U. of Washington) Subject: Acquisitions costs Date: Mon, 31 Oct 1994 13:21:19 -0500 I'm in the process of developing some cost data for acquisitions operations at this library and am interested in any recent acquisitions cost data from other libraries. I'll report back to ACQNET with whatever I learn. At this early stage, I've calculated costs for acquiring books by firm order, via approval and by gift or blanket plan. Those costs--for staff wages and benefits (excluding work outside the unit or not devoted to one of these cost categories), for forms, OCLC searching and Innovative annual fees--are about $15 for firm orders, just over $7 for approvals and just under $7 for gifts and other acquisitions. Our overall cost to acquire an average title of any type is just over $11. (4)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Donna Duncan (McGill University) Subject: Requisitions Searching Quotas Date: Mon, 31 Oct 1994 15:30:30 -0500 I would like to know if your Acquisitions Dept. has a quota for the number of requisitions that should be searched in an hr./day. Thank you for any information you can give me. (5)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Fran McClure Subject: BT LINK Date: Mon, 31 Oct 1994 20:50:32 -0500 For the last three years or so we have been using Baker & Taylor's interactive BTLink in conjunction with CARL's acquisition module. We have been informed by B&T that their support for this service will be abandoned shortly. We are still negotiating exactly when. We recognize that BTLink has never been a mainstream system; nevertheless other libraries have used it. It would help us enormously to touch base with these libraries, for we need to work out options, contingency plans and so on. Please help by identifying yourself or if you are aware of libraries please post to me, fmcclure@cap.gwu.edu. THANKS! ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 4, No. 55 ****** END OF FILE ******
