Subject: Aristarchus Knowledge Industries Date: Wed, 28 Sep 1994 14:33:47 -0400 I have had two responses to my request for information about Aristarchus Knowledge Industries (ACQNET v.4, no.46). Both of the respondents indicated that they were able to place an order for _Nuremberg War Crimes Trials_ on CD-ROM without prepaying. The product is due to be released in October, so the libraries haven't received it yet. No one who has purchased any other Aristarchus products replied to me, but we have gone ahead with our order for the Nuremberg title. If anyone has any further information, I am sure there are others who would be interested. Thanks for the help. (2)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Marsha Hamilton (Ohio State U.) Subject: Fulfillment rate of out-of-print searches Date: Thu, 29 Sep 1994 16:15:05 -0400 (EDT) In response to Peter Stevens' posting about the poor fulfillment rate on o.p. searches...that is one of the reasons why we stopped doing most searches and started a copying procedure instead. Pre-order search staff identify whether an ILL copy of the o.p. title is available. Then the publisher is contacted via phone or fax for preliminary permission to photocopy the o.p. text. If permission is granted on the phone, a follow-up form for their signature is sent. The o.p. title is requested from ILL with a request to the lending library for permission to copy it. If it is in copyable condition, it is sent for copying onto acid-free paper and preservation quality binding. Then we return the original to ILL, and file or tip in the photocopy permission form. It is surprising how many publishers grant permission for free. Although we tell collection managers that the cost of copyright permission may be charged to their book funds along with the copying costs, in practice we've had almost no requests for money. If permission is not granted, we do not copy. Unlike an o.p. search where an acidic or previously owned copy might be found, we get a new, undamaged, archival copy. (3)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Katharin Foster (Ohio Univ.) Subject: Formulas?/Core Periodicals? Date: Mon, 10 Oct 1994 15:10:59 -0400 As Head of Collection Development at the Ohio University Libraries, I am posting the following requests on behalf of our internal Acquisitions Fund Allocation Formula Review Committee. Please respond to me privately by e-mail or post to the addresses listed below. (Or if responding in either of these ways is inconvenient, would you be willing to respond in a brief phone conversation initiated by me at a time convenient for you?) Thanks, in advance, for assisting us in obtaining information about one or both of these topics. 1. If your library has an acquisitions fund allocation formula, please provide us with a description of it and details concerning its structure and application. 2. If your library maintains a core collection of periodicals covering all subjects, please provide us with a description of it and the criteria used to select the titles comprising it. Thanks again for your assistance. (5)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Margaret M. Axtmann (Univ. of MN Law Lib.) Subject: CA Acquisitions Institute publicity - Last Call Date: Mon, 19 Sep 1994 11:41:30 -0400 The Acquisitions Section of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) has developed a one-day institute called Fundamentals of Acquisitions. The institute is targeted to librarians and paraprofessionals new to the acquisitions field, and it will focus on basic acquisitions of monographs and serials. The institute will be offered as a pilot project in conjunction with the California Library Association conference on Nov. 11, 1994, in Anaheim, California. Participants will receive a broad overview of the operations involved in acquiring materials after the selection decision has been made. Topics to be covered include goals and methods of acquisitions services, operational management, publishers and suppliers, budgeting and financial management, ethics, and future trends in acquisitions. A variety of training methods will be used, and extensive handouts will be provided. Fees for ALCTS and CLA members $95; American Library Association members $140; non-members $185. Call Yvonne McLean at 800-545-2433 ext. 5032 or e-mail to yvonne.mclean@ala.org for information and registration.
